Snapchat Unveils New AR and AI Tools for Brands at 2024 IAB NewFronts Event

Snapchat Unveils New Augmented Reality and Machine Learning Tools for Brands

At Wednesday’s 2024 IAB NewFronts event, Snapchat announced a series of new augmented reality (AR) and machine learning (ML) tools designed to help brands and advertisers reach users on the social network with interactive experiences.

Investing in ML for Faster AR Try-On Assets

The company said it’s been investing in ML and automation to make it faster and easier for brands to create AR try-on assets. Over the past few years, Snapchat has worked with companies like Amazon and Tiffany & Co. to let users virtually try on different products in the app. The social network says it has now reduced the time it takes to create these AR try-on assets, allowing brands to quickly turn more of their 2D product catalogs into try-on experiences.

Branded AR Ads with Generative AI Technology

Plus, brands can now create AR ads with generative AI technology to produce custom Lenses. Snapchat told AsumeTech that with this new capability, brands can provide a simple text or image prompt to generate a unique ML model that can add realistic face effects to a Lens. Lenses with these ML face effects can be used as AR ads on Snapchat.

AR Extensions for Advertisers

Snapchat also announced AR Extensions, allowing advertisers to integrate AR Lenses and filters directly into all of the app’s ad formats, including Dynamic Product Ads, Snap Ads, Collection Ads, Commercials, and Spotlight Ads.

Focus on Ad Business and New Snap Sports Network

The company, an early adopter of AR technology, says more than 300 million people engage with AR experiences on its app daily, on average. The launch of the new tools for brands and advertisers comes a few days after Snap reported that its revenue for Q1 2024 increased 21% to $1.195 million, mainly due to improvements made to its advertising platform. Snapchat said on Wednesday that it’s focused on investing in its ad business and is “encouraged” by the increased demand it’s seeing.

Snap Sports Network and Live Nation Partnership

The company also announced the launch of a sports channel called the “Snap Sports Network.” The channel will cover unconventional sports, like dog surfing, extreme ironing, water bottle flipping, and more. It will include user-generated content and scripted content hosted by Snap Stars. In addition, Snapchat is expanding its partnership with Live Nation by launching a new Snap Nation Public Profile featuring exclusive behind-the-scenes content from concerts. Snapchat will also curate stories from Live Nation concerts and festivals featuring public posts from users.

Meta’s Chatbot in India: Blocking Election-related Queries as General Elections Begin

Meta AI Chatbot Testing in India

Last week, Meta started testing its AI chatbot in India across WhatsApp, Instagram, and Messenger. But with the Indian general elections beginning today, the company is already blocking specific queries in its chatbot.

Restrictions on Election-Related Keywords

Meta confirmed that it is restricting certain election-related keywords for AI in the test phase. It also said that it is working to improve the AI response system.

Addressing Concerns

The move makes the social media giant the latest big tech company proactively curtail the scope of its generative AI services as it gears up for a major set of elections.

Google’s Similar Approach

Last month, Google started blocking election-related queries in its Gemini chatbot experience in India and other markets where elections are taking place this year.

Meta’s Proactive Measures

Meta’s approach follows a bigger effort the company has announced around what it allows and does not allow on its platform leading up to elections.

Blocking Specific Terms

Meta’s handling of GenAI queries appears to be based around a blocklist. When you ask Meta AI about specific politicians, candidates, officeholders, and certain other terms, it will redirect you to the Election Commission’s website.

Testing Phase in India

This week, the company rolled out a new Llama 3-powered Meta AI chatbot in more than a dozen countries, including the U.S., but India was missing from the list. Meta said that the chatbot will be in the test phase in the country for now.

Future Plans

Currently, Meta AI is not blocking queries about elections for U.S.-related terms. We have asked Meta if the company plans to restrict Meta AI queries during the U.S. elections or in other markets. We will update the story if we hear back.

Apple’s Alleged iCloud Monopoly, A Deep-Dive Into the Class-Action Lawsuit and its Implications

In a significant turn of events in the tech world, Apple, the leading tech giant, is currently facing a proposed class-action lawsuit that accuses the company of monopolizing the cloud storage for its devices. The lawsuit raises questions about Apple’s commitment to fairness in the technology industry, especially given that the accusation revolves around the pivotal aspect of cloud storage technology, a key component of modern digital lives.

It’s common knowledge that Apple users across the globe heavily rely on iCloud, the tech company’s proprietary cloud storage system. iCloud is undoubtedly a critical ally for users who own Apple devices, storing everything from precious family photos to vital work documents. But, as the proposed lawsuit alleges, Apple’s dominance in the digital storage space for its customers might be a veiled plot to create a monopoly.

Filed last Friday, the lawsuit asserts that Apple has meticulously designed its ecosystem so that it hinders customers from efficiently using any service except iCloud. The legal document accuses that iCloud is the only platform with the capability to host particular data from various Apple devices such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, which include application data and device settings. This alleged practice of binding the devices and iCloud together has, according to the plaintiffs, distorted the competitive scenario in favor of iCloud over its rivals.

“In Apple’s imposed restrictions, we can see the cunning manipulation that has allowed the company to privilege iCloud over all competitors,” the lawsuit intones. It continues to postulate that this practice disallows potential cloud competitors from providing Apple’s device users with a comprehensive, full-service cloud storage solution.

iCloud enjoys a monumental 70 percent market share in the cloud storage realm for Apple users, as cited in the lawsuit. This virtual monopoly, according to the plaintiffs, has given Apple the leeway to dramatically increase iCloud’s prices that further pushes down competition.

The claimants insist that Apple’s burgeoning success in cornering the market has enabled them to “mark up its iCloud prices to the point where the service is generating almost pure profit.” They argue that Apple’s ability to sustain these prices without losing customers reveals its monopoly power.

In the shadow of fix-it-all policies and antitrust laws, the US lawsuit is intended to be a class action that could potentially include tens of millions of members who are all iCloud platform users. The plaintiffs argue that Apple’s alleged monopolistic behavior is a glaring violation of both US antitrust laws and technology policies put forward to maintain a level playing field.

With tech news today being dominated by topics surrounding corporate responsibility, this latest legal issue targeting Apple only underscores the need for ongoing scrutiny of tech monopolies. As the case progresses, it will offer invaluable insights into the considerations around antitrust laws and the broader implications of tech firms monopolizing services for their devices.

For justice to prevail, tech companies must make room for healthy competition within the industry, which ultimately benefits the consumers. And as consumers, it’s essential that we stay informed and attentive in order to discern credibility in the face of potential monopolies. The results of the Apple antitrust case will certainly serve as a groundbreaking precedent for future tech-related lawsuits.

Google Messages RCS Feature Rooted Out

Recently, a significant revelation has been made regarding the Google Messages app’s Rich Communication Services (RCS) feature. Researchers have successfully rooted out RCS from the messaging app, leading to concerns over the security implications of such actions.

The Google Messages app, which serves as the default messaging app on numerous Android devices, has embraced RCS as an advanced messaging protocol. RCS brings forth a range of modern communication features, including read receipts, typing indicators, high-quality media sharing, and more. It also aims to enhance Android messaging to rival Apple’s iMessage.

The researchers closely examined the inner workings of the Google Messages app and discovered a way to extract the RCS feature. By doing so, they could bypass the need for carrier support and access the functionality directly. This revelation raises concerns about potential misuse and unauthorized access to user data.

As the RCS protocol relies on carrier infrastructure, its extraction could pose security risks. A scenario arises where malicious actors could potentially intercept and manipulate communication by circumventing necessary network checks. In addition, unauthorized access to RCS functionality raises concerns over user privacy and the protection of sensitive information.

Google has promptly responded to this revelation, acknowledging the issue and expressing their commitment to addressing it. They have emphasized the importance of maintaining the users’ trust and protecting their confidential information. Google assured users that they are actively working on implementing necessary security measures to prevent any potential misuse of the RCS feature.

Rooting out RCS from Google Messages highlights the need for robust security infrastructure and heightened vigilance in the face of increasing digital threats. This incident serves as a reminder that even seemingly secure features can be vulnerable, necessitating constant efforts to stay ahead of potential exploits.

With the invaluable insights provided by researchers, Google aims to reinforce the app’s security framework and ensure that users can confidently utilize the RCS feature without concerns about privacy breaches or unauthorized access.

As users of messaging apps continue to rely on them for everyday communication, it becomes crucial for both developers and users to remain vigilant and proactive in addressing any potential security gaps, fortifying their privacy protections and maintaining the integrity of their personal information.

Electronic Arts (EA) Cancels Star Wars Game and Announces Layoffs

Electronic Arts (EA) has recently decided to cancel an upcoming Star Wars game and lay off approximately 670 employees globally, which accounts for 5% of its workforce. The game, which was in the early stages of development, was supposed to be a first-person shooter set in the beloved Star Wars universe.

Ubisoft's Star Wars Game

The company has described this move as a “streamlining” effort aimed at delivering deeper, more connected experiences for fans. Unfortunately, this news reflects the ongoing trend of job cuts within the gaming industry.

EA had previously revealed its plans to lay off employees at Codemasters, a renowned UK developer known for creating racing games like F1 23 and EA Sports WRC. These layoffs are expected to be finalized by summer, as the company has already started contacting affected employees.

In a letter addressed to the staff, EA CEO Andrew Wilson explained that the decision to reduce the number of new titles being developed is part of a strategy to focus on their owned intellectual properties (IP), sports games, and massive online communities. Wilson stated, “This greater focus allows us to drive creativity, accelerate innovation, and double down on our biggest opportunities – including our owned IP, sports, and massive online communities – to deliver the entertainment players want today and tomorrow.”

Additionally, in an email to the staff, EA entertainment boss Laura Miele revealed that this strategic shift would result in the cancellation of the upcoming Star Wars game being developed by subsidiary Respawn Entertainment. Miele emphasized that the decision was not a reflection of the team’s talent, tenacity, or passion for the game but rather a response to player excitement surrounding their existing game, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor.

Unfortunately, these job cuts are not isolated incidents in the gaming industry. In January, Microsoft announced plans to lay off 1,900 employees in its gaming division, including some from recently-acquired Activision-Blizzard. Furthermore, just two days ago, Sony revealed plans to axe 900 staff members and close its renowned London Studio.

The impact of these mass layoffs is significant, particularly for the talented individuals affected. Sarah Stevens, head of gaming HR firm e-volveHR, emphasizes the importance of humanity and kindness during these challenging times.

Senior analyst Karol Severin from Midia Research suggests that these recent layoffs reflect the increasing competition within the gaming industry. According to Severin, the industry is entering a new, more mature chapter where efficiency, profitability, and competitive capabilities are paramount. Despite these changes, the gaming industry remains strong with a projected growth of approximately $78 billion by 2030, making it a $223 billion industry in total.

In a major restructuring move, Sony Corporation has recently announced its plans to reevaluate PlayStation Studios and eliminate approximately 900 jobs across multiple divisions. This decision comes as part of their effort to streamline operations and enhance profitability.

The reevaluation process aims to ensure that PlayStation Studios is aligned with Sony’s broader organizational strategy and remains at the forefront of innovation in the gaming industry. By reassessing their portfolio and business model, Sony seeks to optimize resource allocation and focus on delivering high-quality content and experiences to their loyal customer base.

While the decision to cut jobs is often a difficult one, Sony believes it is necessary to maintain its competitive edge and adapt to the rapidly evolving market dynamics shaped by new technologies and shifting consumer preferences.

Despite these workforce reductions, Sony remains committed to supporting the affected employees throughout this transition period. The company plans to provide career transition assistance services, including job placement support and retraining opportunities, to help affected individuals navigate the job market effectively.

Moreover, Sony aims to reassign some employees to other parts of the organization where their skills can contribute to new growth areas. Ultimately, Sony’s strategic realignment is a testament to its commitment to excellence and innovation while ensuring the long-term sustainability and success of the PlayStation brand. By optimizing operations and adapting to emerging market trends, Sony Corporation aims to continue delivering unparalleled gaming experiences to its enthusiastic customer base worldwide.

HMD Announces Partnership with Mattel for Barbie Flip Phone and Introduction of New Devices

HMD, a company known for selling phones under the Nokia brand, is expanding its product lineup for the summer season. In collaboration with Mattel, HMD plans to release a Barbie-branded flip phone in July. This announcement follows HMD’s previous statement about moving away from exclusively producing Nokia-branded products and partnering with new companies. Mattel is the first of such partners, with more collaborations expected in the future.

While no details about pricing, specifications, or features have been disclosed for the Barbie phone, it is expected to be a traditional feature flip phone rather than a smartphone. HMD’s global head of insight, proposition, and product marketing, Adam Ferguson, confirmed that the Barbie phone will be an all-new device, tailored specifically for the brand. He emphasized that Barbie is not the type of brand that can be represented by an off-the-shelf solution.

Additionally, HMD is set to release its own-branded smartphone this summer. Images of a smartphone bearing the HMD logo, similar in design to existing Nokia phones, were leaked by 91 Mobiles. Ferguson clarified that HMD will continue to use the Nokia branding and denied any decline in the popularity of the Nokia name.

As part of its plan to cater to nostalgia, HMD intends to reintroduce an iconic phone this summer, similar to the successful relaunches of the Nokia 3310 and Nokia 8110.

HMD also introduced a unique initiative called HMD Fusion, which offers a DIY platform for tinkerers. This smartphone-style device allows users to create and program their own accessories, similar to the Moto Mod. With six pogo pins on the back of the device, hardware accessories can be attached. The device runs on Android with an unlocked bootloader, allowing for customization. HMD refers to the accessories built for the Fusion as “outfits,” and envisions users customizing the device to suit their specific needs, such as medical professionals developing a blood testing feature or users creating a case with built-in notification lights.

While HMD has unveiled the Fusion platform and initial designs and specifications, feedback from potential users will influence any potential changes to the device’s features.

Furthermore, HMD reaffirmed its commitment to repairability by extending its repairability initiative to their HMD-branded devices. The company aims for half of the phones sold this year to be easily repairable, with a specific focus on improving the repairability of their screens. HMD acknowledges that the previous approach was a step in the right direction but believes there is room for improvement in this area.
