American scientists estimate "Major scientific breakthrough" in nuclear fusion

US scientists announced Tuesday that they have achieved a “major scientific breakthrough” in the field of nuclear fusion, which could one day revolutionize the production of energy on Earth.

And on its Twitter account, the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence National Laboratory’s Livermore National Laboratory explained that last week’s experiment “produced more energy through nuclear fusion” used in lasers to drive the reaction.

Kim Bodell, director of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, called nuclear fusion “one of the most important scientific challenges mankind has ever faced.”

For its part, the US Department of Energy described the onset of thermonuclear ignition as a “major scientific breakthrough” that will lead to “development in national defense and a clean energy future.” nuclear fusion, which its proponents called a clean and abundant source; and energy security, which could eventually allow humanity to end its dependence on fossil fuels, which is the cause of the global climate crisis.
