Samsung’s One UI 6 Update: New Camera Features Powered by AI
Samsung’s One UI 6 update is set to revolutionize the camera experience on Galaxy phones with an array of exciting new features, all powered by artificial intelligence (AI).
Rolling Out to Europe and Coming to the US
This much-anticipated update, based on Google’s Android 14 software, has already started rolling out in select European countries and will soon arrive in the US. This launch comes at a time when AI is taking center stage in smartphones, as evident from recent announcements by Google and Qualcomm.
AI Image Clipping: Your Photos as Stickers
Samsung is taking inspiration from Apple and Google by incorporating certain camera-related features in One UI 6. For instance, the AI Image Clipping feature will allow Galaxy users to cut out specific objects from a photo and turn them into stickers that can be placed on other images. Apple introduced a similar feature in its iOS 17 iPhone update. Furthermore, a GIF in Samsung’s press release showcases the ability to resize the sticker after it has been pasted, reminiscent of Google’s Magic Editor tool for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.
Enhance-X App Expands Photo-Editing Capabilities
Samsung is expanding its existing Enhance-X app, which offers extra photo-editing tools, to include new capabilities in One UI 6. For example, the Sky Guide feature utilizes AI to identify constellations and stars after capturing a photo of the night sky, similar to Google’s Photo Unblur. Moreover, Enhance-X will now allow users to apply Samsung’s Single Take feature to videos and motion images that have already been captured. Single Take, a camera mode on Samsung phones, enables the capture of multiple images in different styles with just one tap. With Enhance-X, your phone will select the best moments and clips from your existing images using Single Take. Additionally, the app will feature the ability to sharpen blurry photos caused by smudged camera lenses and convert regular videos into slow-motion clips using generated extra frames.
Improved Convenience and User Interface
Aside from AI-powered features, Samsung is focusing on making the camera more convenient to use. The update will bring enhancements to document scanning, and switching to a higher resolution shooting mode will be easier within the camera app. For users who frequently utilize specific camera modes like panorama or portrait, these modes can now be saved directly to the home screen as widgets. Samsung is also revamping the layout of editing tools in the camera app and introducing undo and redo buttons for seamless toggling between edits.
AI Integration in the Smartphone Industry
Samsung’s One UI 6 update is a testament to the growing trend of smartphone manufacturers incorporating AI into their products. AI has been present in smartphones for years, powering features such as voice recognition, language translation, and object recognition in photos. However, the surge in generative AI, which can create content based on prompts, following the success of ChatGPT, has fueled even greater interest in AI. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 smartphone chip has been specifically designed to cater to AI use cases and applications. The AI-powered photo-editing features in Google’s Pixel 8 and 8 Pro sets them apart from their predecessors, and Apple is reportedly working on new AI features for iOS 18, as per Bloomberg. Now, we have a glimpse into how Samsung plans to integrate AI into its Galaxy phones with One UI 6.
