Apple Releases Second Betas for iOS 17.3, macOS 14.3

On Wednesday, Apple started sending developers the second betas of iOS 17.3, macOS Sonoma 14.3, and other software changes. Before the Christmas break, the first beta versions of these versions came out on December 14. The beta program is now back up and running, and we’re about to find out what’s new in today’s changes.

iOS 17.3 beta brings Secure Device Protection

The new iOS 17.3 is a big one. Secure Device Protection was added in the first beta. This is an “additional layer of security” that keeps users’ info safe in case someone steals their phone and gets their password. When Secure Device Protection is turned on, for example, Face ID or Touch ID is the only way to get to saved passwords.

It’s also harder for thieves to change the owner’s Apple ID login with this feature. Also, if Secure Device Protection is turned on, removing Find My from an iPhone takes longer. Along with this feature, iOS 17.3 brings back the ability to work together on Apple Music playlists, this time with emoji responses.

The first build had the number 21D5026f, while the current build had the number 21D5036c. When developers want to update their devices, they can go to Settings > General > Software Update.

A new theory, dubbed the “longevity bottleneck hypothesis,” suggests that mammals faced constant pressure to reproduce rapidly during the age of dinosaurs. Over the course of more than 100 million years, this likely led to the disruption or loss of genes associated with long life, such as tissue regeneration and DNA repair, according to the study published in the journal BioEssays.

Implications for Human Aging

“While humans are among the longest-living animals, there are many reptiles and other animals that have a much slower aging process and show minimal signs of aging over their lifetime,” said study author João Pedro de Magalhaes from the University of Birmingham. Dr Magalhães added: “The longevity bottleneck hypothesis may shed light on the evolutionary forces that have shaped mammalian aging over millions of years.”

Impact of Predatory Dinosaurs

Studies have shown that some of the first mammals lived at the bottom of the food chain and may have spent more than 100 million years during the age of dinosaurs evolving to survive through rapid reproduction. “I think that this long period of evolutionary pressure had an impact on the way we humans age,” Dr. Magalhães explained. He continued: “While some animals have truly remarkable methods for repairing cells and tissues as well as regenerating them, such genetic traits were unnecessary for early mammals that were lucky enough not to end up as food for predatory dinosaurs like T. rex. And while we have them now, “A large number of mammals, including humans, whales and elephants, grow large and live a long time. We and these mammals live with the genetic constraints of the Mesozoic era, and we age surprisingly faster than many reptiles.”

Exploring the Hypothesis

The biologist added that although the idea currently exists only as a hypothesis, further inquiries into this pathway may shed more light on why cancer is more prevalent in mammals than in other species.

Scientists captured on video an extremely rare bird with male colors on one half of its body and female plumage on the other half, shedding more light on “intersex” in the animal kingdom.

Unique Sighting in Colombia

Scientists said that the rare green honeycomb bird was spotted on a farm in a nature reserve near Manizales, Colombia. It had aqua blue feathers on one half and greenish yellow feathers on the other half with a clear border in the middle. Males of this species usually have bright blue feathers and a black head, while females are grassy green in color.

Gene Defect

The bird’s unusual color is believed to be caused by a diploid gene defect, a rare error in cell division that results in the formation of an egg that allows fertilization by two different sperm.

Internal Organs

“The bird showed typical male feathers on its right side and female feathers on its left side,” the scientists said, adding that its internal organs were also likely divided down the middle into male and female. However, scientists could not confirm this by sight alone.

Observations and Study

The team studied this rare bird for 21 months, during which it returned to feeding on fresh fruits and sugar water left by the Colombian farm owners every day. This is only the second report of a bird with acanthosis syndrome, as the first bird was recorded more than a century ago, but this is the first time that this has been captured on camera.

The team was not able to study the rare bird every day. He explained: “It appears that he remained in the vicinity for periods ranging from approximately 4 to 6 weeks and then disappeared for another 8 weeks or so.” The bird also appears to wait for other birds to leave before approaching, according to scientists from Whitehawk Birding and Conservation in Panama.

Reproduction Challenges

The team explained in the Journal of Field Ornithology: “On the whole it avoided other species, and others avoided it as well. It seems unlikely that this organism would have any chance of reproducing.”
