In his weekly Power On email, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said again that Apple will release a fourth-generation version of the AirPods in 2024. This version will have several new features that will make the earbuds more appealing to customers.
The fourth generation of AirPods has a purple triad
The AirPods 4 will come in two styles and cost two different amounts. Apple wants to update the AirPods 3 and the cheaper AirPods 2, which it still sells. The only real difference between the AirPods 2 and 3 is the design. Gurman says this confuses buyers and costs Apple money when choosing the cheaper model.
With AirPods 4, the choices you have for AirPods will be simpler. The earbuds will look new, which Gurman talked about in October. With shorter stems, the new AirPods will likely look like a mix of the present AirPods and the AirPods Pro. The fit should improve, but it’s still unclear if Apple will add plastic ear tips.
Enhanced Case
The upcoming AirPods 4 will boast a redesigned case featuring built-in speakers for the Find My feature and a USB-C charging port, replacing the traditional Lightning plug. Notably, the pricier AirPods variant will now include the sought-after Active Noise Cancellation (ANC), a feature previously exclusive to the AirPods Pro. This advancement allows customers to access ANC at a more affordable price point.
Apple plans to introduce hearing aid functionalities to AirPods in a significant move through a software update slated for the following year. This update positions AirPods as an over-the-counter (OTC) alternative to traditional hearing aids, aligning with the FDA’s 2022 decision to permit over-the-counter hearing aids. This strategic move aims to cater to individuals facing hearing challenges, with plans to offer hearing tests for AirPods users to assess potential hearing loss.
Anticipated for a 2024 release, the AirPods 4 may coincide with Apple’s customary September launch alongside new iPhones. Additionally, Apple has earmarked 2024 for the release of an updated version of the AirPods Max, introducing fresh color options and a USB-C charging port.
Looking ahead to 2025, Apple has plans to enhance its premium AirPods Pro with a faster chip and a redesigned form emphasizing comfort. This commitment to innovation underscores Apple’s dedication to providing cutting-edge audio technology while catering to diverse user needs.
