This is a welcome development in an industry where most Android phones, regardless of their price, lack sufficient software support. For example, Google’s $449 Pixel 5A from 2021 will not receive any new Android OS upgrades or software updates after August 2024, which can pass by quickly in just three years.

Declining Smartphone Sales and the Need for Longer Software Support

Smartphone sales are declining year over year due to inflation, and people are now looking for devices they can hold onto for as long as possible. Market analyst firm Canalys predicts a 12% decline in the North American smartphone market this year. However, phone-makers still rely on the stable market for premium phones. As customers keep their phones longer, it becomes essential to provide them with new features and security protections for a longer period of time.

Moreover, the need for phones to receive more years of software support is not only driven by inflation. It is also aligned with the growing push for phones to become more repairable. Various US states have passed right to repair laws, which include electronics such as phones and tablets. The European Union has also recently adopted right to repair proposals. Therefore, as Google extends the lifespan of its Android phones, there are several reasons why phone buyers can benefit if the wider industry embraces longer phone lifespans.

The Messy State of Android Update Support

Currently, Android update support across the industry is in disarray. Google increased its security update policy in 2021, providing the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro with five years of security updates until October 2026. However, software updates remained limited to three years. This means that after the release of Android 15 next year, the Pixel 6 is unlikely to receive any new software features.

In contrast, iOS users who bought the iPhone 12 Mini or iPhone 13 from Apple in 2021 received assurance of software and security updates for much longer than three years. Even older models like the iPhone XR and XS from 2018 continue to receive security-focused updates. The situation varies among other Android phone-makers. Samsung had surpassed Google’s software update promise before the Pixel 8 announcement by providing four years of software updates and five years of security updates for its Galaxy S and Z phones. OnePlus recently started promising four years of software updates and five years of security updates for certain models. Motorola, however, lags behind with three years of software updates and four years of security updates for its Razr Plus model. The industry needs to establish clearer and more consistent policies to alleviate confusion and ensure customer flexibility regarding the longevity of Android phones.

The Importance of Security Support for Phones

Since phones are constantly connected to the internet, they are vulnerable to security issues. Phone-makers constantly provide updates to ensure the safety of your device. Outdated phones can be susceptible to software issues, allowing hackers to steal data or install malware. Unfortunately, many Android phones, even expensive ones, come with brief security update timelines. For example, the RedMagic 8 Pro priced at $649 offers only two years of guaranteed security updates, which is insufficient considering its high-end specifications. Long-term security support is crucial to ensure the ongoing safety of users’ data.

While Google’s seven-year commitment is the longest among major phone-makers, Fairphone currently surpasses Google’s promise with an eight-year commitment to security updates and availability of spare parts for DIY repair. Fairphone’s previous model, the Fairphone 3 launched in 2019, is receiving software updates until 2026. In comparison, Google’s Pixel 4 and 4 XL from 2019 received their final updates last year. Samsung’s Galaxy S10 line also received its final updates earlier this year. This highlights the need for longer security support across the industry.

Phone Hardware and Repairability

Battery life and performance are the most common reasons to replace a phone, unless it has been lost or broken. However, advancements in software optimizations have addressed many of these issues, allowing devices to last longer. Additionally, the costs of phone repairs, although still high in some cases, have been declining. For instance, replacing a Samsung Galaxy S21 battery costs around $80. Google has emphasized the repairability of its Pixel 8 line and partnered with iFixit to provide spare parts and repair guides. Apple has also made efforts to reduce repair costs and improve repairability in its iPhone models.

While there have been improvements in repair accessibility, there is still room for progress. Right to repair laws have expanded access to phone repairs, but the availability of officially licensed parts and guides remains a challenge. The phone market lags behind industries like kitchen appliances and computers when it comes to off-the-shelf parts that can be easily used for repairs. In contrast, certain devices like the Valve Steam Deck handheld gaming console are designed with simple upgrade capabilities, demonstrating the potential for similar practices in the phone industry. Furthermore, incorporating more recycled materials into phone production can help reduce waste when devices are discarded.

Improving Durability and Cooling Systems

Despite advancements in phone durability, there is room for improvement. Companies like Apple and Samsung are making efforts to enhance durability, but phones still break, as seen in various bending and stress tests. Phones could also benefit from better resistance to heat, especially for prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Some gaming phones already incorporate advanced cooling systems to ensure optimal performance. The simplicity of upgrading devices like the Steam Deck for additional storage also demonstrates the potential for better upgradability in the phone industry.

Extending a Phone’s Lifespan

While longer software support is valuable, there is still room for improvements that can extend a phone’s life. Addressing issues such as durability, repairability, and heat resistance will have a significant impact on device longevity. By making hardware upgrades as simple as software updates, phone-makers can provide customers with phones that can last longer. The efforts of companies like Google and Fairphone are commendable, but it is crucial for other major phone-makers like Samsung, Motorola, and OnePlus to follow suit and prioritize longer software and security support for their devices.
