How to Share AirTags and Track Valuable Items in iOS 17

Sharing AirTags on iOS 17

When Apple released iOS 17 on September 18, it brought a plethora of new features and improvements to your iPhone. One of the most useful additions was the ability to share AirTags with up to five people. This means that you can now share AirTags for communal items, such as luggage, allowing more people to track and help you find lost items.

An Introduction to AirTags

Apple introduced AirTags in 2021 as a convenient way for people to keep track of their valuable items, like keys that mysteriously vanish within the depths of your couch. However, at first, AirTags could only be attached to one user. If you wanted to lend someone an AirTag, it was simply not possible. Additionally, if you traveled with someone who had an AirTag, you would receive a notification informing you that you were accompanying an unidentified AirTag. Thankfully, all that changed with the release of iOS 17.

Now, let’s explore how you can share AirTags with others, allowing them to easily find your precious belongings.

How to Share AirTags

1. Open the Find My app.

2. Tap Items across the bottom of your screen.

3. Select the AirTag you wish to share.

4. Tap Add Person under Share This AirTag.

A prompt will appear on your iPhone, informing you that anyone with whom you share the AirTag will have the ability to locate it and will not receive unidentified tracking notifications. Tap Continue and proceed to choose with whom you want to share the AirTag.

Once you have shared the AirTag, the recipient will receive a notification. They simply need to tap the Add button within the notification, and the AirTag will be added to their Find My app.

If you encounter a notification for a shared AirTag that you don’t recognize during this process, you can tap Don’t Add.

How to Stop Sharing AirTags

If you have lent your AirTag to a family member or friend and they have returned it, you can easily stop sharing the AirTag with them. Here’s how:

1. Open the Find My app.

2. Tap Items across the bottom of your screen.

3. Select the AirTag you want to stop sharing.

4. Tap the name of the person you wish to stop sharing the AirTag with.

5. Tap Remove.

Your iPhone will display a prompt confirming that the person will no longer be able to locate your item and will receive unidentified tracking notifications instead. Tap Stop Sharing, and you’re done.
