ChatGPT’s Mobile Revenue Growth Slows but Sets New Records: 15.6 Million Downloads and $4.6 Million in Gross Revenue in September

Growing Success and Slowing Growth: The Tale of ChatGPT’s Mobile Expansion

Exciting news and a few challenges lie ahead for ChatGPT’s mobile venture. With an impressive number of app installs and soaring revenue, September marked a new record for the AI chatbot. It amassed a staggering 15.6 million downloads and grossed nearly $4.6 million worldwide across its iOS and Android apps. However, recent data from market intelligence firm Appfigures suggests that revenue growth has begun to decelerate. After consecutive months of exceeding 30% growth, September witnessed a 20% growth rate.

Reaching Saturation: The Limit of Paying Mobile Users

Slowing revenue growth may indicate that ChatGPT is approaching saturation in terms of the number of mobile users willing to invest in the upgraded ChatGPT+ subscription service. This in-app purchase, priced at $19.99 per month, provides users with faster response times, priority access during peak times, and early access to new features and improvements. Despite its relatively steep price, the subscription has been well received. June saw gross revenues of $2.1 million, followed by $2.74 million in July, $3.81 million in August, and an all-time high of $4.58 million in September.

A Rival’s Success: The Reign of Ask AI

Surprisingly, ChatGPT is not the AI app generating the highest revenue. Appfigures’ data reveals that a rival called Ask AI outpaces ChatGPT due to its heavy investment in advertising. While ChatGPT mobile’s revenue climbed steadily from $6.48 million in May (when it launched) to a peak of $6.55 million in August, it dipped slightly to $5.51 million in September. Nevertheless, Ask AI still holds a larger market share than ChatGPT. Competitors such as Genie and AI Chat Smith have not yet achieved the same level of success as Ask AI.

However, it’s worth considering the net revenue of Ask AI, which accounts for the substantial ad spend. ChatGPT, after Apple and Google’s deductions from in-app purchase revenues, still managed to secure around $3.2 million in net revenue during September.

Impressive Installations: ChatGPT’s Expanding User Base

In addition to setting a revenue record, ChatGPT experienced a remarkable 15.6 million installations in September, bringing its lifetime total to 52.2 million according to Appfigures. Out of these, 9 million were driven by Google Play, with the App Store contributing the remaining 6.6 million.

The App Store’s Revenue Dominance

As expected, the App Store played a significant role in driving revenue, contributing $3 million to the total in-app purchases made last month. The United States stands as the largest market for the AI chatbot app, accounting for 60% of ChatGPT’s revenues.
