MacRumors recently got some new information about Apple’s iPhone lineup for 2024, which included seeing versions of the Pro models. Based on Apple’s internal designs, we’ve made a set of models. The prototypes aren’t quite finished yet, but our pictures give us the best idea of what the next-generation iPhones will look like right now.
The next-generation iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will have bigger screens and a sensitive Capture button. They will build on the curved edges and titanium frame that Apple introduced with the iPhone 15 Pro.
Several reports say that the screens on the iPhone 16 Pro (codename Diablo) and iPhone 16 Pro Max (codename Lightning) will be bigger than the ones on the current models. They will be 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches, respectively, instead of 6.1 inches and 6.7 inches. One reason for this change could be the 5x tetraprism Telephoto camera, which will likely be offered on both of this year’s Pro iPhone models. In the iPhone 15 line, the 5x Telephoto lens is only in the bigger iPhone 15 Pro Max. The smaller iPhone 15 Pro does not have it. This year’s phones are bigger, so Apple will be able to fit the tetraprism Telephoto camera on both the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max.
The iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max have had the same basic shape and design throughout their development by Apple. However, the company has tried out different design details for the devices. It was tried with four different button layouts, and Apple seems to have chosen one that looks like the buttons on the iPhone 15 Pro, with an extra button on the right side of the iPhone.
Like the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, both Pro models in the iPhone 16 line will have an Action button that can be used for more than one thing. Different functions can be set up for the button, based on what the user wants it to do. Apple has played around with making the Action button bigger and different in design, but the current design documentation says that it will be the same size as the one on the iPhone 15 Pro.
A previous idea for an action button, called Atlas, was meant to be a bigger capacitive button with a force sensor. The latest plans for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max don’t have this bigger Action button, so it’s still not clear what will happen with the Atlas project. Apple may have given up on the project in favor of a standard mechanical Action button.
In October, a leaker on Weibo named “Instant Digital” said that the iPhone 16 Pro would have an Action button that is flush with the frame of the phone. MacRumors saw private documents that back up this claim, and they show that this was a part of the earlier “Proto1” development stage. When we look at the “Proto2” style we have now, the Action button is not as big and is not flush with the frame.
Innovative Features and Design
On the right side of the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro models, a notable addition is the all-new Capture button, previously highlighted in our December renders of the standard iPhone 16 models. Recognized by the codename Nova, the Capture button is anticipated to be a capacitive-type button with force-sensor functionality. Recently confirmed by Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, this innovative button is designed for video capture purposes. Positioned below the power button, its inclusion prompts a noteworthy change for U.S. models – the relocation of the mmWave antenna from the right side to the left side of the device. The Capture button is seamlessly integrated into the iPhone’s frame, maintaining a flush design, unlike the protruding power and volume buttons.
Continuing with the tradition of premium materials, the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max will retain the use of Grade 5 Titanium (Ti-6Al-4V), consistent with the iPhone 15 Pro. The overall finish is expected to remain largely unchanged. In terms of colors, Apple’s prototypes showcase a “Silver” hue, marketed as “White Titanium.” Initial documentation indicates that Apple has experimented with existing colors from the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max for testing purposes, with plans to introduce an additional color option. However, specific details on the new color option remain undisclosed at this time.
While our mockups faithfully represent the current design of the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, it’s crucial to note that these devices are still in an early stage of development. As such, Apple may implement further design tweaks and modifications before the official release. For more in-depth information on the ongoing developments, stay tuned for updates.
