The Optimus Robot’s Capabilities

The video depicts the Optimus robot next to a table while it folds a black shirt on its own without any assistance. Tesla unveiled the humanoid robot for the first time in 2022, as part of Musk’s broader goals to automate all physical human work and enhance the company’s manufacturing operations.

Elon Musk’s Ambitions

According to the billionaire’s biography published last year, Musk told his employees that the Optimus robot was key to turning the electric car company into a $10 trillion company. The company said its ambition for the robot is to create “a general-purpose, autonomous dual-pedal robotic robot capable of performing unsafe, repetitive or tedious tasks.”

Debunking the Video

However, about 30 minutes after sharing the latest video, Musk shared an “important note” below the post that the footage was not quite what it seemed. “Optimus can’t do it autonomously yet, but he will certainly be able to do it completely autonomously and in an arbitrary environment (it won’t require a fixed table with a box containing only one shirt),” Musk said. Some observers pointed to a gloved hand briefly appearing in and out of frame in the video, appearing to mimic the movements of the robot’s hands.

Future Prospects

The electric car company has not yet provided information about the price or release date of Optimus, but in the past Musk has hinted that the robot could cost less than $20,000.
