Egyptian-Spanish Archaeological Mission

The Egyptian-Spanish archaeological mission succeeded in uncovering a number of tombs dating back to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, and a number of mummies from the Roman era in the Al-Bahnasa area in Minya Governorate.

Discovery of Tombs and Mummies

The Egyptian-Spanish archaeological mission affiliated with the University of Barcelona and the Institute of the Ancient Near East discovered a number of tombs dating back to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras, and a number of mummies from the Roman era, during its excavations in the Al-Bahnasa archaeological area in Minya Governorate.

New Type of Burial

The Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, Dr. Mustafa Waziri, described the tombs from the Roman era as a new type of burial with terracotta statues depicting the goddess Isis Aphrodite. The area is still revealing many secrets and burial methods from different eras.

Discovery of Artifacts

The mission also found parts of papyrus inside a clay seal, as well as a large number of mummies wrapped in colored wrappings, with some faces covered in gilded and colored funerary masks. Additionally, a gold tongue was found inside the mouths of some mummies, indicating ritual practices from the era.

Architectural Design of Tombs

The Director General of Antiquities of Central Egypt, Dr. Jamal Al-Samastawi, explained the architectural design of the tombs, which included stone wells leading to large holes containing empty and closed coffins with mummies. Some coffins also contained small votive perfume bottles.

Uncovering of Stone Blocks

The professor of archeology at Cairo University, Dr. Hassan Amer, highlighted the discovery of stone blocks belonging to a demolished building, many of which were decorated with plant drawings, bunches of grapes, and depictions of animals and birds such as pigeons and cobra snakes.

Future Excavations

Dr. Amer also mentioned that the mission will continue its work on the site in the coming seasons, aiming to uncover more artifacts and secrets hidden in the area.
