Google Wallet: More State IDs Coming in Next Few Months

During the month of October, the total number of state IDs that may be used with Google Wallet was expanded to four. According to Google, “Digital ID will be a cornerstone for [Google] in the next year,” and the Wallet app for Android will soon include functionality for additional states.

This is what Dong Min Kim, the head of product management for Google Wallet, stated in an interview with American Banker that was published the previous week. Kim also hinted to a “pipeline” of planned upgrades to the service.

There’s a pipeline of additional states that will come online in the next few months, according to Kim.

The difficulty stems from the fact that local authorities (state DMVs) take varied methods to the problem. The Google employee pointed out that this is a more challenging challenge than mobile payments, which are more standardized in contrast.

At the time of the announcement of Google Wallet at the I/O 2022 conference, the company indicated that its intention was to virtualize and replace physical wallets. The following are examples of items that fall under this category: credit and debit cards, tickets for public transportation and events, airline boarding passes, loyalty and gift cards, vaccination records, digital car keys, student identification cards, and employee and office badges.

Mobile driver’s licenses and state identification cards were being promoted as a potential future expansion area at the time, with Maryland becoming the first state to go live with the technology in December of that year.

After a period of 10 months, the states of Arizona, Colorado, and Georgia decided to join Maryland. Those four states are also included in Apple’s Wallet app; however, the business had earlier announced in September of 2021 that Connecticut, Iowa, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Utah will also be supporting its initiative.

Looking outside the United States, Kim stated that Google is collaborating with other nations to bring support of a similar nature.

As a “personal hack” of sorts, Google has “noticed people are storing content and all kinds of documents in Gmail and Google Drive.” This is a “personal hack” of sorts. A statement made by Kim indicated that the business believes “there can be a better way to do that with Google Wallet.” The Files app is going to remove its “Important” tab for identity documents in India, which could be a possible explanation for why this centralization is taking place.
