16 firefighters killed in the fire of the oil depot in Cuba

The fire that raged for a week in early August in an oil depot in western Cuba killed 16 firefighters, 14 of whom have not been identified, a forensic expert said.

The authorities announced the death of two firefighters and the loss of 14 others. The president of the Cuban Society of Forensic Medicine, Jorge Gonzalez Perez, said in a press conference that these missing persons died at the scene of the disaster and added: “Since the remains found have been exposed to high temperatures for a long time, it is not possible to perform a DNA extraction” from them, the presidency said. Cuban said the victims’ funeral will take place on Friday and declared a two-day national mourning.

The fire, caused by lightning, broke out on August 5 at the Matanzas oil depot, 100 kilometers east of Havana, setting fire to four of the eight tanks, which can hold up to 52 million liters of crude oil or mazut. in the largest storage center in the country.
