The department indicates that, according to researchers, this technology allows the production of medicines and medical preparations in Russia for use in the field of transplantation of artificial organs and the treatment of injuries.

According to scientists, platelet growth factor-based drugs are widely used in the treatment of trauma and regenerative medicine. Because it has a strong therapeutic effect. It is also used in the transplantation of artificial organs and tissues from stem cells.

Specialists at Vyatka University have developed a technology that makes it possible to produce platelet growth factor synthetically.

“An analogue of this technology exists in the world,” says Anna-Anastasia Mystrova, a researcher at the Department of Biotechnology. “But for various reasons, it has become difficult to buy these molecules abroad, besides, they are not cheap, and supplies can stop at any moment. The source of this valuable substance was Pichia pastoris yeast, as scientists added a cloned human gene encoding platelet growth factor to their genome. The addition of methyl alcohol, which this single-celled fungus uses for energy and carbon, causes the genetically engineered yeast to produce a growth factor that is purified by chromatography.

The researchers indicate that they were able to obtain the growth factor PDGF-BB with a purity of more than 98 percent and high stability. They made a prototype gel formulation containing 100 micrograms of growth factor per milliliter.

“Our method for obtaining growth factor from yeast has no analogues in the scientific literature. So, it is likely that it will be of interest to companies and countries that have to catch up with this area of ​​biotechnology,” says Mystrova.
