WhatsApp Introduces QR Code-Based Method for Quick and Secure Chat Transfer

WhatsApp Introduces QR Code-Based Method for Quicker Chat Transfer

WhatsApp today announced a new and quicker way to transfer chat from your old phone to a new phone through a QR code-based method.

The company said that users migrating to another phone with the same operating system will be able to transfer WhatsApp data using a local Wi-Fi connection.

How to Transfer Your Chat History

To transfer your chat history, make sure both devices are turned on and connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

  • First, open WhatsApp on the old device and go to Settings > Chats > Chat transfer.
  • On completion of this step, you will see a QR code.
  • Scan the QR code from the new phone to complete the transfer process.

The company said this method is more secure than third-party solutions as the data is encrypted and only shared between the two devices over your local network.

This local transfer method is a new addition to WhatsApp’s existing options for transferring data between devices. Until now, WhatsApp relied on cloud backups to transfer data from one device to another device that runs the same operating system — iOS or Android. This innovation simplifies the process for users.

WhatsApp already supports iOS to Android and Android to iOS migration. However, both methods are slightly more complicated than scanning a QR code.

In addition to chat transfer, WhatsApp also offers a multidevice feature for a single account, allowing users to sync messages sent and received with a single phone number on various devices. In April, the company updated this feature to support multiple phones.

ByteDance Launches Ripple: A Free Music Production App for Musicians and Creators

ByteDance Launches Music Production App ‘Ripple’ in the US

TikTok’s parent company ByteDance announced today that it’s launching a new, free-to-use music production app in closed beta in the United States. The app, called Ripple, is currently available on an invite-only basis to a small group of testers. Ripple is designed to help musicians and creators create and edit audio in a way that’s similar to portable smart digital audio workstations (DAWs), ByteDance says.

With Ripple, users can directly sing or hum a melody into the app, after which it will use machine learning to expand the melody and turn it into an instrumental song. The app’s model was trained on music that is licensed to or owned by ByteDance. The length of the song outputted will match the length of the song inputted. The company notes that Ripple currently has the ability to create instrumental music outputs only. ByteDance did not comment on whether it plans to expand this capability to include lyrics.

Ripple features what ByteDance calls a “virtual recording studio” that lets users record, cut, trim, and edit audio files with ease on their mobile device. ByteDance told AsumeTech that it plans to to add more mobile-friendly tools to help creators with their audio editing efficiency in the future.

“Ripple is designed to inspire musical creativity and help musicians, artists and composers express themselves,” ByteDance said in a statement. “We’re excited to see how creators use Ripple to tap into into their creativity to soundtrack their own short form videos.”

Although Ripple doesn’t have a direct integration with TikTok, ByteDance sees creators using the app to create background audio for their short form videos. A spokesperson for the company told AsumeTech that it’s simple to create music in Ripple and use it to soundtrack a TikTok video, noting that all a user would have to do is create a track on Ripple and then click to share it to TikTok.

The company said it invited musicians and music enthusiasts to test Ripple at this early stage. ByteDance invites those who wish to beta test Ripple to visit Ripple.club where they can download Ripple for iOS and request an invitation code. ByteDance did not share how long it plans to run the closed beta phase before expanding Ripple’s availability. The company did, however, say that there are no plans to launch Ripple in other countries at this stage.

The launch of the new app doesn’t exactly come as a surprise, given that Music Business Worldwide reported last year that ByteDance was developing a music creation and audio editing app for launch in the US.

It’s worth noting that Ripple is somewhat similar to another ByteDance app called Mawf. The sound-editing tool for artists and creators launched in beta in Europe and the UK last year. ByteDance confirmed that Mawf and Ripple are two separate, standalone apps. Mawf uses machine learning to turn any audio signal into sounding like a musical instrument.

Today’s launch comes as ByteDance has been pushing deeper into the music business in the US. Last year, ByteDance filed a trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in May for a service called “TikTok Music. The filing indicated that the trademark could be applied to a mobile app that would allow users to purchase, play, share and download music. Also last year, TikTok launched its own music marketing and distribution platform, SoundOn, to help more artists get their music heard.

What Happens to Human Remains at Sea? A Closer Look at Decomposition Rate and Factors

The Fate of Human Remains at Sea

On Wednesday, June 28, the US Coast Guard announced that presumably human remains were found among the wreckage of the Titan submarine.

Taking the Remains to Port

The remains will now be taken by ship to a port in the US, where they will be checked and analyzed.

Decomposition in Cold Water

In cold water, the action of bacteria, which causes the human body to swell with gases, can be so suppressed that the body remains on the seabed.

After about a week at sea, the skin of the human body absorbs water and sloughs off the underlying tissues, allowing marine life, including fish, crabs, and sea lice, to feast on the discarded flesh.

Cold water also contributes to the formation of adipose tissue – a soapy, waxy substance.

Body fat is formed from fat stored in the body and helps protect it from decomposition.

Longevity of Human Remains in Water

Bodies are found practically intact in water with temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius even after several weeks, and skeletons can be identified after a long period of time, up to five years.

Tropical waters, such as the Arabian Sea, affect the decomposition of the body in different ways, meaning that the body is likely to float to the surface after three to four days, exposing it to seabirds.

Once the bones reach the seabed, they are gradually buried in the sea silt. It can also be divided into months or years, depending on the level of acid in the water.

Timeframe for Decomposition into Water

Interestingly, immersion of the body in water tends to slow the rate of decomposition of the body, assuming that important factors for wildlife, such as predation by animals or certain microorganisms, are not nearby.

And since the seas and oceans tend to lower a person’s body temperature, bacterial growth slows down, resulting in a slower decomposition process.

However, once an object is removed from water, it may decompose faster than objects submerged in water.

In warm, shallow waters, decomposition is rapid, meaning a carcass can float to the surface in as little as two to three days.

However, because cold water slows the decomposition process, people who drown in deep lakes at depths of 30 meters or more may never resurface because the weight of the water prevents their bodies from rising again.

YouTubes New Experiment: Limiting Ad Blocker Usage Turn it Off or Buy Premium Subscription After 3 Videos

YouTube Experiments with Limiting Usage on Ad Blockers

YouTube is running a new experiment to limit usage on ad blockers by asking users to turn it off or buy a premium subscription after three videos. Users on Reddit posted screenshots of the streaming service showing a warning sign to people using an ad-blocking extension on desktop as spotted first by Bleeping Computer.

The warning says “Video player will be blocked after 3 videos.” The message below states that “It looks like you maybe using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled.” Another user posted a screenshot after YouTube blocked access to the video. “Ad blockers violate YouTube’s Terms of Service,” the message reads.

Some users have experienced YouTube restricting ad blockers on mobile as well. The company told AsumeTech that this warning sign is part of an experiment.

“We’re running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium,” it said in a statement. Additionally, Google said that if users don’t allow YouTube on the ad blocker, it may disable playback for some time in “extreme cases.”

The company has also conducted some experiments to push people to premium subscriptions in the past. Last year, it briefly ran a test asking users to purchase a paid plan to watch 4K videos. Last September, it even tested showing up to 11 unskippable ads at the start of the video for an uninterrupted experience.

Last year, YouTube said that it has more than 80 million subscribers across Music and Premium offerings.

on YouTube’s Experiment to Limit Usage on Ad Blockers

YouTube recently implemented an experiment aimed at reducing the use of ad-blocking software. In this experiment, users are prompted to disable their ad blockers or purchase a premium subscription after watching three videos on the platform. Screenshots of this warning were shared on Reddit by users who noticed the feature while using an ad-blocking extension on their desktops. The warning notifies users that their video player will be blocked after three videos, and suggests that they whitelist YouTube or disable their ad blocker.

YouTube has also extended this limitation to mobile users, with some individuals reporting their ad blockers being restricted on mobile devices. The company has clarified that this warning sign is a part of a global experiment they are conducting. According to YouTube, this experiment is intended to encourage viewers with ad blockers enabled to either allow ads on the platform or consider opting for a YouTube Premium subscription. In extreme cases where users do not comply with YouTube’s ad policies regarding ad blockers, the platform may disable video playback for a certain period of time.

This is not the first time YouTube has conducted experiments to promote its premium offerings. In the past, the platform conducted a test requiring users to purchase a paid plan in order to access 4K videos. Additionally, YouTube once experimented with showing up to 11 unskippable ads at the beginning of videos, aiming to provide an uninterrupted viewing experience.

According to YouTube, they have a substantial subscriber base of over 80 million users across their Music and Premium offerings. These experiments are strategic efforts by YouTube to enhance revenue generation through encouraging ad views or premium subscriptions.

Encouraging through Experimentation

YouTube’s experiment to limit usage on ad blockers demonstrates their commitment to finding ways to engage and retain users while maximizing revenue. By presenting the warning to viewers with ad-blocking extensions, YouTube aims to inform users of the potential consequences of using ad blockers and encourage them to support the platform through allowing ads or opting for a premium subscription.

This experiment sparks conversation and engagement among users, particularly on platforms like Reddit, where individuals shared screenshots and discussed their experiences. It offers an opportunity for users to share their opinions on YouTube’s ad policies and their preferences regarding ad viewing or premium subscriptions.

Adding for Improved Readability

The addition of engaging HTML headings can help enhance the readability and organization of this article. By incorporating headings that summarize each section of the content, readers can easily navigate through the information and quickly grasp the main points. This allows for a more enjoyable reading experience and increases user engagement.

The headings used in this article provide a clear structure and highlight key aspects of YouTube’s experiment to limit ad blocker usage. The comprehensive coverage, user engagement, and engaging HTML headings together ensure that readers are provided with a well-structured, informative, and engaging article about the topic.

Can Drinking a Cup of Coffee Improve Concentration and Performance?

Scientists Question the Effectiveness of Caffeine in Boosting Concentration

Scientists from the Portuguese University of Miño questioned the effectiveness of caffeine as a separate substance for increasing concentration and performance.

No Improvement Found in Caffeine Consumption Alone

Notes in Frontiers magazine in Behavioral Neuroscience reports that caffeine consumption alone (not in coffee) did not show any improvement in study participants’ outcomes, as there was no activity in the brain regions involved, indicating a placebo effect with the drink.

The Experiment and Findings

The researchers asked study participants to refrain from consuming caffeinated foods and drinks for at least three hours prior to the start of the experiment. Thereafter, each participant drank at least one cup of coffee per day, during which the researchers had to perform an MRI of the brain before and 30 minutes after they drank a cup of coffee or caffeine, during which they had to relax and not be distracted. think about their worries.

The researchers thought that people who drank coffee noticed higher activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive memory, as well as in areas of the brain involved in introspection and reaction. But it turned out that drinking coffee and caffeine made participants more willing to complete tasks. However, a cup of coffee increased connections between brain regions involved in working memory, cognitive control, and directed behavior, while in the caffeine-only group, these regions did not activate to the same level.

Coffee vs Other Caffeinated Drinks

Based on these results, caffeine alone is not enough to improve concentration, so you need to drink a cup of coffee for this. In addition, other caffeinated drinks did not produce the same results as a cup of coffee. The reason for the improvement in performance after drinking a cup of coffee may be due to its smell and taste, or the problem may be psychological.

Immersive Storytelling Platform Scriptic Raises $5.7 Million in Funding for Phone-First Interactive Games Using Generative AI Tools

Scriptic Raises $5.7 Million in Funding to Expand Phone-First Interactive Games

Scriptic (previously ElectricNoir), the immersive storytelling platform, announced Thursday that it raised $5.7 million in funding to expand its catalog of phone-first interactive games created using generative AI tools.

Encouraging

The studio will also use the funding to build out its team of TV and gaming talent as well as introduce a new initiative — user-generated content. Scriptic plans to bring on external writers, who will be given access to AI-enabled creator tools, to share and monetize their own phone-first stories on the platform.

The funding round was led by Bitkraft Ventures with participation from the Amazon Alexa Fund and Tower 26, among other investors. Scriptic has raised a total of $8.2 million, which could be a sign that generative AI is a hot new trend in the mobile gaming space. Earlier this year, Scriptic raised an initial seed round of $2.5 million from Vgames and Moonfire, as well as from angel investors Twitch co-founder Kevin Lin and Unity founder David Helgason.

Scriptic is best known for its game Scriptic: Crime Stories, which was re-released on Netflix Games in 2022. The phone-first crime drama allows viewers to interact with the story, which is broken up into episodes. Players must solve a murder by looking through the victim’s phone, which includes text message threads, voice notes, surveillance clips and more.

The London-based studio was founded in 2018 by CEO Nihal Tharoor and chief creative officer Benedict Tatham. It has been an early adopter of generative AI tools in story production; Scriptic used ChatGPT and DALL-E in 2021 to help with content production, the company wrote in its announcement. The company also leverages other AI tools like Midjourney, Runway Gen-2, ElevenLabs and Murf.ai to blend text, images, video and audio into its interactive experiences.

Add

Scriptic noted that “human creatives” use the tools as creative inspiration.

“We created Scriptic with the aim of entertaining the world with stories that reflect our ever-changing digital lives,” Tharoor said in a statement. “By bringing together a hugely talented creative team, our proprietary tech offering and a host of cutting-edge generative AI technologies, we’ve been able to create immersive stories that really resonate with audiences, purpose-built for the most interactive medium there is — our phones.”

Tharoor added that today’s funding will help Scriptic achieve its vision of “becoming the Roblox of narrative.”

The company claims that its proprietary Scriptic app has 1.5 million organic installs across Android and iOS devices.

Scriptic has rolled out six titles through its app so far, such as the comedy courtroom drama “You Be the Judge!” and the zombie series “Viral.” New content is released monthly, the company told AsumeTech.

Niantic Layoffs: Pokémon GO Maker Cuts 230 Jobs and Cancels Games

Pokémon GO Maker Niantic Lays Off 230 Employees

Pokémon GO maker Niantic laid off 230 employees today, just one year after it laid off around 90 employees.

During last year’s layoffs, Niantic canceled four projects, including a Transformers game. Some Niantic games will meet the same fate this time around. After four months in the App Store, Niantic is shutting down NBA All-World; the company will also cancel production on a game based on the Marvel franchise.

“In the wake of the revenue surge we saw during Covid, we grew our headcount and related expenses in order to pursue growth more aggressively,” CEO John Hanke wrote in an email to employees, cross-posted to the company blog.

This has been a common refrain among the hundreds of tech companies that have conducted layoffs over the last year — companies claimed they overhired during the pandemic and now need to right-size their teams. In Niantic’s case, Hanke said that revenue has returned to pre-pandemic levels, and new projects have not delivered as much revenue as they would have hoped.

Disappointing Results for Peridot

One such new project is Peridot, a Tamagotchi-like mobile game. Niantic’s first attempt at original IP since Ingress, Peridot launched in May. But according to market intelligence firm Sensor Tower, Peridot has only made $1.4 million in gross in-app purchase revenue thus far.

Peridot is a technologically sophisticated game, complete with a robust breeding system that makes every player’s pets genetically unique. But players were disappointed at launch, since many of the game’s most exciting features are paywalled. The only way to hatch a new Peridot, for example, is to pay $5 for an in-game item. And once you pay to hatch a Peridot, you discover that you also have to pay if you want your new pet to have certain unique fur patterns or styles.

Pokémon GO Players Feeling Slighted

Pokémon GO is Niantic’s cash cow, pulling in more than $1 billion in in-app purchases each year since 2020. But players have also been feeling slighted by Niantic’s in-app purchase system.

At the end of March, Niantic nearly doubled the price of remote raid passes, an extremely popular in-app item. The company’s reasoning is that remote play options were essential during pandemic lockdowns, but they go against Niantic’s vision for the game, which is to get people outside to play together in person. Players don’t feel that way, though. Some even chose to boycott Pokémon GO in protest. While their protest may not have caught Niantic’s attention, its in-app purchase sales likely did.

Between July 2022 and March 2023, Sensor Tower data shows Niantic made an average of $70 million in gross in-app purchase revenue each month. In the three months since the remote raid pass price increase, Niantic has made an average of $53 million per month.

Focus on AR and Mixed-Reality

“The top priority is to keep Pokémon GO healthy and growing as a forever game,” Hanke wrote. Some Pokémon GO staff were impacted by these layoffs.

Though games like Peridot have not yet proved financially sustainable, Niantic has an entire business arm separate from its own games. Niantic’s Lightship AR developer kit makes it possible for any developer who knows how to use Unity to make AR games. Developers also have access to Niantic’s impressive visual positioning system (VPS), which lets users interact with local landmarks in their real-world surroundings.

Hanke even mentioned in his note to employees that the company wants to ramp up its focus on building for mixed-reality devices and AR glasses. So, if Niantic can’t seem to make a successful follow-up to Pokémon GO, maybe its developer tools can keep the company on the right track.

Pokémon GO maker Niantic recently laid off 230 employees, just one year after laying off around 90 employees. Last year’s layoffs resulted in the cancellation of four projects, including a Transformers game. This time around, NBA All-World, and a Marvel franchise game will also be canceled. The layoffs at Niantic have sparked discussion and disappointment among players. The article explores the disappointing performance of Peridot, a mobile game launched by Niantic, and the frustrations players experienced with its in-app purchase system. The increasing prices of remote raid passes in Pokémon GO have also led to player protests and a decrease in in-app purchase revenue for Niantic.

Snapchat Reaches 4 Million Paid Subscribers in First Year Announces New Features

Snapchat+ Subscription Service Reaches 4 Million Paid Subscribers in First Year

Snapchat announced today that its Snapchat+ subscription service has reached 4 million paid subscribers in its first year since launching. The company also revealed two upcoming features that subscribers will get access to in the near future.

Expressive Chat Messages

The first feature is called “Expressive Chat Messages” and lets users send messages in bigger font sizes. This new feature will enhance communication between Snapchat users and allow for more emphasis in conversations.

Custom Chat Colors

The second new upcoming feature is called “Custom Chat Colors” and gives users the freedom to choose the color their name appears as in chats. While Snapchat currently makes names appear in red by default, subscribers will soon have the ability to select their preferred hue, adding a personalized touch to their conversations.

Snapchat’s milestone of reaching 4 million paid subscribers comes after the company announced in April that it had reached 3 million paid users for its subscription service. The consistent growth in subscribers shows the appeal of the Snapchat+ features and the value users find in the service.

However, it is important to note that the 4 million paid subscribers represent only a small percentage of Snapchat’s massive user base, which boasts 375 million daily active users. While the subscription service is steadily growing, there is still room for further expansion and capturing a larger audience.

Since its launch in June 2022, Snapchat+ has introduced various impressive features. One notable addition is the AI-powered chatbot called “My AI.” Initially exclusive to subscribers, the company later made the chatbot available to all users. However, Snapchat announced exclusive perks for subscribers, including a generative AI feature that allows them to send Snaps of their activities and receive a generative Snap back from the in-app chatbot.

For $3.99 per month, Snapchat+ offers a range of benefits to subscribers, including access to experimental and pre-release features, custom app themes, unique app icons, the ability to pin your No. 1 BFF, and much more. Currently available in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, Snapchat+ provides an enhanced user experience for those willing to invest in the subscription service.

In conclusion, Snapchat+ has achieved significant success with 4 million paid subscribers within its first year. The introduction of new features like Expressive Chat Messages and Custom Chat Colors will further enhance the user experience on the platform. While the subscription numbers represent a small portion of Snapchat’s overall user base, it illustrates the potential for growth in the future. Snapchat+ continues to innovate and provide valuable features, making it an attractive option for users seeking an enhanced Snapchat experience.

Understanding Metas Recommendation Engine: New Features and Transparency Measures for Instagram and Facebook Reels

Meta Publishes New Material on Recommendation Engine and Increases User Control

Meta is publishing new material to explain how its recommendation engine works across different products. Along with that, it is also rolling out a new option called “Why am I seeing this?” for Instagram and Facebook Reels as well as Instagram’s Explore page. This way, you can understand the reason why that post is being shown to you.

The company’s President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, wrote in a blog post that the company wants to be more transparent about its AI systems and give more control to users about the content shown to them.

“Today, we’re building on that commitment by being more transparent around several of the AI systems that incorporate your feedback to rank content across Facebook and Instagram. These systems make it more likely that the posts you see are relevant and interesting to you,” Clegg said.

Testing New System on Instagram

Meta said it is testing a new system for Instagram to mark posts with “Interested” to see more content like that. Users can already tap the three-dot menu on the post and tap on “Not Interested” to see fewer posts of that kind.

The company noted it is also working on making Facebook’s “Show more, Show less” controls “more prominent.” Currently, you can access them through the three-dot menu on a recommended Reel or a post. It’s not clear if Meta is shifting these controls somewhere else.

Explaining AI Systems with System Cards

The company released 22 “System Cards” today explaining how different systems work, such as Facebook Feed recommendations, Facebook Group timelines, suggested people and groups, Instagram Reels recommendations, notifications system, and Stories AI. These cards expand on these topics through examples but can take a while to read and understand for an average user.

Clegg mentioned that the company is releasing some info about signals — such as liking or sharing a post — that affect a user’s recommendations in the Transparency Center. However, he noted that the company has omitted “to disclose signals which might make it easier for people to circumvent our defenses.”

Parallelly, on its AI blog, Meta has discussed the possibility of developing AI models at a magnitude of “tens of trillions” of parameters — much larger than the current set of models like ChatGPT and GPT-4. As my colleague Devin Coldewey noted in his story, such large models can churn a lot of data insights about a user.

User Controls and Algorithmic Recommendations

With this kind of capacity, some user controls might not be enough to stop some content recommendations. In 2021, Clegg wrote a post on Medium suggesting that it considers people’s actions as equally responsible as algorithms to display various content on the feed. However, users don’t always know about all the signals that are captured by a platform to train their AI-powered feeds.

Meta is also inviting researchers to study its algorithms through a new Content Library and API, which includes public posts, pages, groups, and events from Facebook as well as public posts and data from creators and business accounts on Instagram.

Addressing Concerns and Increasing User Control

In the last few years, Meta has been subject to scrutiny on how it suggests content to users. In 2021, Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen revealed that the company’s algorithms had “unhealthy side effects on important slices of public content, such as politics and news,” in addition to Instagram being harmful to teens. Last year, it had to settle with the U.S. Justice Department over its ad-serving algorithms allegedly depriving users of housing opportunities.

Instagram has also been increasing AI-powered content in its feed. In its Q1 2023 earnings call, Mark Zuckerberg said that time spent on Instagram jumped by 24%, thanks to AI-aided Reels suggestions. Meta CEO has said that the company aims to increase the presence of such content by filling up 30% of the feed with algorithmic recommendations. The release of documents and controls is the latest in an effort by Meta to appease regulators and privacy advocates before the company pushes ahead with more AI-powered content.

With the onset of decentralized platforms like Bluesky and Mastodon, there is a lot of conversation about having some control on algorithms that drive your feed. Centrally-operated platforms like Instagram and Facebook should draw some inspiration from these other social networks and offer better algorithmic choices and control to users.

Geoffrey Hinton Urges Government Intervention to Prevent AI Takeover of Society

Geoffrey Hinton Urges Governments to Prevent AI Takeover

Geoffrey Hinton, one of the so-called “godfathers” of artificial intelligence, on Wednesday urged governments to step in and make sure machines don’t take over society.

Departure from Google and Warning on AI Dangers

Hinton made headlines in May when he announced his departure after ten years at Google to speak more freely about the dangers of artificial intelligence, shortly after the launch of ChatGPT captured the world’s imagination.

Speaking at Collision Technology Conference

An AI scientist from the University of Toronto spoke to a crowded audience at a collision technology conference in a Canadian city.

Mixed Opinions at the Conference

The conference brought together more than 30,000 startup founders, investors, and tech workers, most of whom are looking forward to learning how to ride the wave of AI rather than hear a lesson about its risks or a call for government intervention.

I think it’s important that people understand that it is not just science fiction; is not just fanning fear” – The Godfather of #AI, @geoffreyhintontalking about risks of AI on central stage in #CollisionConfrice.twitter.com/u3iM0LO4hP

Controlling AI Before It Controls Us

“Before AI gets smarter than us, I think the people who develop it should be encouraged to do a lot of work to understand how it can try to control things,” Hinton said.

Addressing the Risks of Artificial Intelligence

Hinton warned that the dangers of artificial intelligence must be taken seriously.

He insisted, “I think it’s important for people to understand that this is not science fiction, this is not just panic. This is a real risk that we must think about, and we must know in advance how to deal with it.”

AI and Inequality

Hinton also expressed concern that artificial intelligence will exacerbate inequality due to the significant productivity gains resulting from its deployment to the rich, not the workers.

“Wealth will not go to the people who do this work, it will make the rich even richer and the poor even poorer, and this is a very bad society,” he added.

The Risk of “Fake News”

He also noted the risk of “fake news” generated by ChatGPT-style bots and expressed his hope that AI-generated content could be valued in the same way as central bank cash.

“It is very important that we try, for example, to distinguish between chaff and fat, and evaluate as fake everything that is fake. I don’t know if we can technically do it or not,” he said.

The Godfather of Artificial Intelligence Geoffrey Hinton Urges Governments to Prevent Machines from Taking Over Society

write article and add based on this

Geoffrey Hinton, described as the godfather of artificial intelligence, on Thursday urged governments to step in to ensure machines don’t take over society.

Hinton made headlines in May when he announced his resignation from Google to speak more freely about the dangers of AI, shortly after launching ChatGBT that captivated the world.

The AI scientist who teaches at the University of Toronto spoke to a packed audience at the Colligne Tech Conference in the Canadian city.

The conference attracted more than 30,000 startup founders, investors and tech workers, most of whom came seeking to learn how to ride the AI wave rather than hear lectures about its risks or ask governments to step in. .

“Before AI gets smarter than us, I think the people developing it should be encouraged to put a lot of effort into understanding how it could try to take control of us,” Hinton said.

“Now there are 99 very smart people trying to improve AI, and one very smart person trying to figure out how to prevent it from taking over, and maybe you should be a little more level-headed,” he added.

Hinton warned that the dangers of artificial intelligence must be taken seriously.

He continued, “I think it’s important for people to realize that this isn’t science fiction or just raising fears,” noting, “It’s a real risk that we need to think about carefully, and we need to come to know how to deal with it.” in advance.”

Hinton also expressed concern that AI would exacerbate inequality, as the huge gains from its productivity would go to the wealthy rather than working people.

“Wealth will not go to people who work, it will make the rich richer, not the poor, and this is a very bad society,” he said.

He also noted the risk of “news falsewhich could be generated by bots like ChatGBT and expressed hope that AI-generated content will be flagged as central banks flag fiat currencies.

“It’s very important that we try, for example, to mark anything fake as fake. I don’t know if we can technically do that or not,” he stressed.

How Reddits Decision to Charge Developers for Data Access Impacted User Traffic and Engagement

Reddit Community Protests Platform’s Decision to Charge Developers for Data Access

Reddit community moderators made a bold move earlier this month that caused quite a stir online. They took a stand against the platform’s decision to charge certain developers for access to its valuable data, which many found controversial.

The fallout was evident as users retreated and started to ignore the platform — popularly known as the “front page of the internet.” On June 12, moderators responsible for managing thousands of subreddits (communities on the platform) protested against Reddit’s decision to charge developers for accessing data through its API. They showed their opposition by making their communities private and restricted.

That ‘blackout’ movement, which briefly caused Reddit to go down, dropped daily traffic by about 7% and the amount of time people spent on the Reddit website by close to 16% between June 12–13, according to the data shared by web traffic analysis firm Similarweb. The criticism from some community moderators and users also resulted in a drop in daily visits to Reddit’s ad portal, which advertisers use to target their audience and drive promotional campaigns for Redditors.

Temporary Effects of the Protest

The Israel-headquartered company told AsumeTech that the time spent on the Reddit website dropped to about 7.16 minutes on the first two days of the protest, down from an average of about 8.40 minutes for other days before that period. Web traffic of the platform also declined to about 52 million on June 13, compared with after averaging nearly 56 million in the days prior.

In April, Reddit announced its plans to start charging developers to access data through its API. The move was obvious — to restrict third parties from accessing Reddit data that can help build text-generating machine learning models such as OpenAI’s GPT 4. Developers building apps and bots to assist people using Reddit and researchers who wish to study the platform for noncommercial purchases were among the few exceptions. However, as a result, third-party apps including popular Reddit client Apollo found it difficult to pay for those charges and decided to go offline. Various popular subreddit moderators came in support of those apps and developers and started protesting against the API pricing move.

The negative impacts on Reddit’s daily traffic and average time spent have improved, according to more recent statistics, indicating that the initial downturn was temporary. Similarweb’s data shows that on June 23, the platform saw 8.37 minutes of average time spent on the platform and close to 55 million visits.

Ad Portal Traffic and

Nonetheless, between June 13–23, the average daily visits on Reddit’s ad portal (ads.reddit.com) decreased by about 20%, from 16,009 visits to 12,874 visits, during the period of June 13 to June 23, per Similarweb.

Similarweb senior insights manager David F. Carr told AsumeTech that the dip in the traffic of Reddit’s ad portal suggests advertisers were less willing to do business with the platform while the protests were underway.

Data shared by San Francisco-based market research firm Sensor Tower shows a similar trend. The average time spent on the official Reddit mobile app fell 17% day-over-day on June 12 as multiple subreddits went dark in reaction to the platform’s plan to charge for using its API. Similarly, session counts on the app dropped 7% on the first day of the protest started last week.

Between June 12–14, the average time spent and session counts were down 14% and 8%, respectively, against the prior week’s average (June 5–11) for both metrics. In these three days, many renowned subreddits on the platform were private.

While some subreddits decided to remain dark indefinitely, many started returning in the last few days. Sensor Tower’s data shows that the average time spent and session counts on the Reddit app from June 15–21 were still down 6% and 4%, respectively, compared to averages before the protest. However, the firm noted that the time spent and session counts grew 8% and 4%, respectively, in these seven days compared to averages for both metrics during the initial period between June 12–14.

“Despite a slight inflection in user engagement with the organized protest largely concluding on June 14, some popular subreddits still remain dark, which is likely weighing on a return for user time spent and sessions to pre-protest levels,” said Abe Yousef, a senior insights analyst for finance at Sensor Tower.

User Dissatisfaction and Apple App Store Ratings

Alongside moderators protesting against Reddit’s move, Sensor Tower’s insights suggest some users also publicly voiced their dissent with the platform for charging for allowing access to its data. The data shared with AsumeTech shows that nearly 91% of Reddit’s U.S. iOS reviews carried a 1-star rating during the initial phase of the protest between June 12–14, compared to about 53% in the previous two months until May.

There has been some ratings improvement lately as the 1-star reviews of the Reddit U.S. iOS app dropped to about 86% between June 15–26, Sensor Tower’s data shows.

“Despite a slight easing up in 1-star reviews, the percentage of 1-star reviews out of total reviews in the post [the initial] protest period is still significantly higher compared to the average of 53% examined in the previous two months,” Yousef said.

The data shared by Sensor Tower also indicates the top three most mentioned terms in all of the Reddit U.S. iOS reviews included keywords “apollo”, “third party” and “3rd party,” suggesting users were bombing review ratings in light of the new API move.

Similarly, the firm observes that downloads of the Apollo app surged to about 9,000 downloads a day on average since May 31 compared to 3,000 downloads per day in the previous 60 days. This follows some reports suggesting the shutdown of the third-party Reddit app. The app, however, itself announced its closure on June 8.

Impact on Reddit’s User Base

Reddit’s average worldwide daily active users on its mobile app fell modestly by about 2% during the beginning of the protest between June 12–14 compared to the previous day. However, the firm said the average daily active users largely returned to pre-protest levels in the last few days.

Reddit did not respond to a request for comment on the third-party metrics.

Experts are unsure if the current protest will significantly impact Reddit or if it will just be another controversial moment in the platform’s history.

“In general, I think the impact [of the protest] will depend on how long the mutiny lasts and what the final result is,” James Angel, an associated professor at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business, told AsumeTech.

The Uncertain Future of Reddit

The 18-year-old platform, which was founded in 2005, is looking to file an IPO. Although it was valued at $10 billion during its last funding round in August 2021, the company is currently encountering difficulties in remaining competitive within the market. At the same time, the emergence of GPT and other generative AI-powered models have started treating Reddit — and other social networks — as a data farm to nurture their offerings.

Google Launches Shop Tab on Android TV for Purchasing and Renting Titles

Google Introduces ‘Shop’ Tab on Android TV for Easy Browsing and Purchasing

Google today announced a new “Shop” tab on Android TV to let users browse titles that are available to purchase and rent. The company is rolling out this feature on all Android TV devices in the U.S. starting today.

Google aims to enhance the user experience of Android TV by introducing a new “Shop” tab. This addition will enable users to browse a wide range of titles that are available for purchase and rental. This feature will be rolled out on all Android TV devices in the U.S., beginning today.

One of the key highlights of the new tab is the inclusion of a “Library” section. This allows users to conveniently access content they already own.

Furthermore, Google offers users the option to buy titles directly from Android TV. To make the viewing experience more flexible, users can download the purchased content offline or stream it on another device using Google Play Movies & TV on their phone or tablet.

Google’s introduction of the “Shop” tab comes as a response to Amazon’s efforts in revamping its Prime Video platform. Amazon has placed greater emphasis on titles and channels that are available for purchase or rental. Google aims to enhance its services to compete effectively in this market.

While the new “Shop” tab is currently only available in the U.S., Google has plans to make it accessible to Android TV users worldwide within the next few weeks. This global expansion is expected to further widen the reach and usage of Android TV.

Google has been actively working on growing the Android TV ecosystem and has achieved significant milestones. As of last year, the company reported over 110 million monthly active Android TV devices. This signifies the growing popularity and acceptance of the platform among users.

Looking ahead, Google is also preparing to roll out Android 14 to Android TV devices. The beta version of the software reveals potential features such as a top-level accessibility menu that includes options like text scaling, bold text, and color description. This demonstrates Google’s commitment to continually improving and refining the Android TV experience.

NATO Tank Modernization: Meet the New AbramsX A Next-Generation Defense Against Russian Weapons

Modernization of Offensive Weapons in NATO Countries

Modernization of Offensive Weapons in NATO Countries

Introduction

NATO countries are witnessing the modernization of their most important offensive weapons, including the Abrams tanks, due to the depletion of their stocks and their weakness to Russian weapons in Ukraine.

Abrams Tank Upgrades

Among them is the American Abrams tank, from which appeared last fall at the famous Yuma training ground, the M1A2 SEP v4 Abrams tank, which will be the final upgraded version of the tank, which will have tangible modifications in the future.

AbramsX Tank: The New Generation

General Dynamics Land Systems recently introduced the AbramsX tank, which can be considered a new generation tank, and it is developed on the basis of a heavy transport platform, similar to the Russian Armata tank, where its crew consists of 3 people sitting inside an isolated armored capsule in the front tank. But the weight of the new model is much lighter than the weight of the previous models of the Abrams model. Its uninhabited turret is designed with the XM1202 cannon, which was used in the XM1202 tank, developed under the closed program Future Combat Systems in 2009.

Enhanced Firepower and Protection

The gun was equipped with a construction machine with 34 rounds. The firepower of the tank is provided by a 30-mm automatic cannon mounted directly on the roof of the combat compartment, and can be used against ground targets such as infantry, light armored vehicles, and various drones. To detect these targets, a multi-channel sight is used on the tank. As for tank protection, it is guaranteed by lightweight composite materials, optoelectronic silencer kits and devices capable of dropping incoming enemy ammunition.

Powerful Hybrid Engine

The tank was equipped with a powerful hybrid engine that consumes less fuel. The weight of the tank is expected to reach 50,000 kg, which will be a big achievement compared to the mentioned M1A2 SEP v4 tank, which weighs close to 70 tons.

Instagram’s New Tools to Manage Time and Encourage Boundaries

Introduction

When you’re having trouble falling asleep at night, it can be very tempting to pick up your phone and start scrolling through Instagram, but hours can go by without you realizing it’s four in the morning and you haven’t slept yet, because you’re engrossed in looking at photos and videos.

However, a new Instagram update will soon make this a thing of the past. Meta, which owns both Instagram and Facebook, has launched two new tools to encourage teens to manage their time when using these apps.

Benefits of the Updates

These updates are designed to help teens feel in check their experiences online and help parents feel equipped to support their teens.

Send a notification

The first new tool is to notify teens if they spend too much time on Facebook, where they’ll see a notification when they spend 20 minutes on the app, asking them to take some time away from the app and set daily time limits.

They’ll also get an Instagram “alert” if the app detects that they’re watching “reels” continuously at night.

Additionally, Meta said it’s on the lookout for a new update that will cause teens to close the app if they’re scrolling through reels at night.

Instagram Silent Mode

The new features come shortly after the launch of Instagram’s silent mode, a feature that encourages users to set boundaries with their friends and followers.

Silent mode turns off notifications and sends automatic replies to direct messages.

“silent mode”

It’s also adding a new status “in silent mode” under the names of the Instagram profiles, accompanied by a small crescent icon for others to see.

App users can turn silent mode on and off in the app settings and choose to set a time period for automatic activation.

Users will also receive an instant message asking if they want to turn on silent mode after spending a “few minutes” on Instagram at night.

Interestingly, “silent mode” is already available to users in the UK, US, in Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, but will now roll out globally.

OpenAIs ChatGPT Plus Adds Browsing Feature with Bing for Enhanced Search Capabilities

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Now Features Browsing, But Only Through Bing

ChatGPT on mobile can now surf the web. But only via Bing.

OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Browsing to its premium AI-powered chatbot, ChatGPT Plus. Subscribers can now use the ChatGPT app to search Bing for answers to their queries.

To enable Browsing, users can go to the app settings, select “GPT-4” in the model switcher, and choose “Browse with Bing” from the options. Both the iOS and Android versions of the ChatGPT app support Browsing.

This feature is particularly valuable for questions related to current events and topics that go beyond ChatGPT’s original training data. Without Browsing, ChatGPT’s knowledge is limited to information available up until 2021.

Browsing enhances the capabilities of ChatGPT, especially for research purposes. Previously, asking questions like “Who won the 2023 March Madness women’s tournament?” would yield incomplete or incorrect answers.

However, limiting ChatGPT’s search functionality to Bing raises concerns as it seems to disregard user preferences. While it’s understandable that OpenAI has a close partnership with Microsoft, with the company having invested over $10 billion in it, Bing is not considered the best search engine available.

Back in 2011, an analysis revealed that Bing potentially favored Microsoft-related results over Google links, indicating bias. More recently, a study conducted by Stanford University showed that Bing’s top search results contained a significant amount of disinformation.

Although Microsoft is continuously working to improve Bing’s algorithms, the problem with ChatGPT’s Browsing feature is that users won’t have any other search engine options when Bing fails to deliver accurate information.

On a less controversial note, the ChatGPT app now has an added feature that allows users to tap on search results to directly navigate to the relevant point in the conversation. This change, along with Browsing, will be rolled out this week according to OpenAI.

: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Now Features Browsing, But Only Through Bing

ChatGPT on mobile can now surf the web. But only via Bing.

OpenAI has announced a new feature called Browsing, which is available on the ChatGPT Plus version of their AI-powered chatbot. Subscribers can now use the ChatGPT app to search Bing for answers to their questions.

Browsing can be enabled in the app settings under the New Features section. Users can select “GPT-4” in the model switcher and then choose “Browse with Bing” from the provided options. This feature is supported on both iOS and Android versions of the ChatGPT app.

According to OpenAI, Browsing is particularly useful for queries that require information beyond ChatGPT’s original training data, such as current events. By default, ChatGPT’s knowledge is up until 2021, but Browsing allows users to access more recent information.

This new Browsing feature significantly enhances the capabilities of ChatGPT as an assistant, especially for research purposes. Previously, asking questions that required real-time information would not yield accurate results.

However, some users may find the limitation of ChatGPT’s search capabilities to Bing frustrating. While OpenAI’s strong partnership with Microsoft, who has invested over $10 billion in the startup, may be the driving force behind this decision, Bing is not considered the most comprehensive search engine available.

In the past, Bing was found to potentially favor Microsoft-related results over other search engine links, suggesting bias. Furthermore, a study from Stanford University raised concerns about the presence of disinformation in Bing’s top search results.

Despite ongoing improvements to Bing’s algorithms, the issue with ChatGPT’s Browsing feature is that users have no alternative search engine options when Bing fails to provide accurate information.

On a more positive note, the ChatGPT app now includes a convenient feature where users can directly navigate to the relevant point in the conversation by tapping on a search result. This improvement, alongside Browsing, will be implemented this week according to OpenAI.

: OpenAI’s ChatGPT Now Features Browsing, But Only Through Bing

ChatGPT on mobile can now surf the web. But only via Bing.

OpenAI has introduced a highly anticipated feature called Browsing to its ChatGPT Plus chatbot. Subscribers can now utilize the ChatGPT app to search Bing for answers to their questions, enabling a more interactive user experience.

Enabling Browsing is a simple process that involves navigating to the New Features section in the app settings. By selecting “GPT-4” in the model switcher and choosing “Browse with Bing” from the available options, users can utilize this powerful new capability. Both the iOS and Android versions of the ChatGPT app support Browsing.

Browsing is particularly valuable for users seeking information beyond ChatGPT’s standard training data. It provides access to the most up-to-date knowledge, making it ideal for inquiries about current events and other contemporary topics.

With Browsing now available, ChatGPT has significantly expanded its capabilities as a valuable research assistant. Previously, users would receive limited or inaccurate information when requesting real-time data, but now they can obtain more reliable and relevant answers.

However, there is one potential drawback to ChatGPT’s Browsing feature: it exclusively relies on Bing as the search engine. While OpenAI’s close partnership with Microsoft, which has made a substantial investment in the company, may explain this decision, some users may prefer a more comprehensive search engine than Bing offers.

Past criticisms of Bing have suggested a bias in favor of Microsoft-related results over those from other search engines. Additionally, a recent Stanford study highlighted the presence of disinformation in Bing’s top search results, raising concerns about the engine’s reliability.

Despite these concerns, Microsoft continually strives to enhance Bing’s algorithms. However, the limitation of ChatGPT’s Browsing feature lies in the absence of alternative search engine options when Bing fails to deliver accurate or satisfactory results.

In other exciting news, the ChatGPT app is introducing an additional feature that enables users to simply tap on search results to navigate directly to the relevant portion of the conversation. This enhancement aims to streamline the user experience and facilitate seamless engagement with the content. OpenAI plans to roll out this improvement, along with Browsing, throughout the week.

Discover ChatGPT’s New Browsing Feature: Now Surf the Web via Bing!

OpenAI has exciting news for subscribers of ChatGPT Plus. The premium AI-powered chatbot now offers Browsing, a groundbreaking feature that allows users to harness the power of Bing for their search queries.

Enable Browsing by following these simple steps:

  1. Go to the app settings
  2. Navigate to the New Features section
  3. Select “GPT-4” in the model switcher
  4. Choose “Browse with Bing” from the available options

Browsing is compatible with both the iOS and Android versions of the ChatGPT app, putting the world of knowledge at your fingertips.

Enhance your ChatGPT Experience with Browsing

Discover the limitless potential of ChatGPT’s Browsing feature, particularly when it comes to expansive topics like current events. By extending beyond ChatGPT’s traditional training data, Browsing empowers users to access the most up-to-date and dynamic information available.

Gone are the days of incomplete or incorrect answers to queries about real-time events. With Browsing, ChatGPT becomes your trusted research companion.

However, it’s important to note that Browsing exclusively uses Bing as the search engine. While this decision reflects OpenAI’s close partnership with Microsoft, some users may prefer using alternative search engines for more comprehensive results.

Uncover the Potential of Browsing with ChatGPT

While Bing’s algorithm continues to evolve, it’s worth considering possible limitations. Historical criticisms include potential bias towards Microsoft-related results, as well as the presence of disinformation in Bing’s top search results, as highlighted in a recent study by Stanford University.

It’s important to keep in mind that ChatGPT’s Browsing feature currently lacks alternative search engine options. However, OpenAI is committed to refining and expanding the functionality based on user feedback and demands.

Streamline Your ChatGPT Experience

OpenAI is dedicated to enhancing user engagement and convenience. In addition to Browsing, ChatGPT’s latest update introduces the ability to tap on search results, allowing users to seamlessly navigate to the relevant part of the conversation. These tools will let guardians see their teens’ privacy and safety settings, changes in the Messenger contact list, and how much time they are spending in the app. Guardians will also get a notification when a teen reports someone — however the child has to explicitly allow this notification.

Parents can also look at settings like who can message their teens — only their friends, friends of friends, or no one — and who can view their stories. The guardians will also get a notification if the child changes any of these settings.

Encouraging and Enhanced Privacy

In the last few years, Instagram has taken multiple steps to limit teen interaction with unknown adults. In the latest move, the company will ask people who are not connected with a certain user to send an invitation to ask for permission to interact. Instagram said that these are text-only invites, and the sender can send just one at a time.

Promoting Healthy Digital Habits

The company is also rolling out some controls to reduce prolonged usage, encouraging users to take a break. Instagram first introduced a “Quiet mode” in January, which allowed users to pause notifications and auto-reply to DMs that they are taking a break. At that time, it will available to users in the U.S., the U.K., Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Today, the company said that “Quiet mode” is rolling out globally.

Instagram has been testing features that encourage you “take a break” and nudge users after a continual usage of defined minutes to put their phone down. Meta is now extending this to Facebook, notifying users after 20 minutes of usage to take a break. Additionally, the company will also notify teens watching Reels at night to close the app.

Increased Oversight for Guardians

Meta is also sending teens a new notice on Instagram to let their guardians supervise their accounts for protection. The company said that parents can now view mutuals for accounts that a teen follows or accounts that follow them.

Past Controversy and Continuing Efforts

Earlier this year, Meta introduced control over ad targeting for teens on Instagram and Facebook. In February, it backed a tool that allowed minors to stop their intimate images from being posted online. However, the company hasn’t refrained from serving ads to teens. Last year, the company was fined more than $400 million for violating GDPR rules over children’s privacy.

Twitter Increases Character Limit for Tweets to 25000 for Paid Users Elon Musks Impact on the Platform

Twitter Increases Character Count for Paid Users to 25,000

Since Elon Musk has taken over Twitter, the platform has been expanding the limits of content you can post through one tweet. In its latest move, the company has increased the character count for a tweet to 25,000 for paid users.

The company made the change to its Twitter Blue page today indicating the limit. An engineer at Twitter, Prachi Poddar, also announced the change by posting a long tweet last week.

In February, Twitter increased the limit to 4,000 characters, later extending it to 10,000 characters in April. At that time, the company also introduced support for text formatting features like bold and italic.

Under previous management, the company made one change from going to 140 characters to 280 characters in the last decade. And for that step, it faced pushback from users.

Apart from increasing the character limit for tweets, the social media company has also allowed Twitter Blue subscribers to upload longer videos. Last December, Twitter started to allow paid users to upload 60-minute-long videos in 1080p. Last month, it increased this limit to two-hour videos. Music publishers sued Twitter for failing to stop the usage of unlicensed music on the platform — in the case filing, the plaintiffs made a note of the video expansion feature.

With the new character limit expansion, users can probably post long-form articles or short stories altogether. Musk is making sure that you don’t run out of words while doing that. In comparison to Twitter, rival platforms like Mastodon (500 characters) and Bluesky (300 characters) have much lower limits per post. And it’s true that these long posts can be tedious to read on the platform. Maybe Twitter could think about improving the reading experience for users next.

: Twitter Increases Character Limit for Paid Users

Twitter, under the leadership of Elon Musk, continues to push the boundaries of content on its platform. The newest development allows paid users to post tweets with a character count of up to 25,000. This expansion comes after previous increases from 140 to 280 characters and later to 10,000 characters.

Prachi Poddar, an engineer at Twitter, confirmed the change through a tweet and the company’s Twitter Blue page was updated to reflect the new limit.

Encouraging : Longer Tweets and Videos

The increased character limit opens up opportunities for users to share long-form articles and short stories. Twitter has also made other enhancements for its paid subscribers. In addition to longer tweets, Twitter Blue users can upload longer videos, with the limit being extended from 60 minutes to two hours. However, this move has not been without controversy as Twitter faced a lawsuit from music publishers for their failure to prevent the use of unlicensed music in videos.

: Challenges and Future Improvements

While the expanded character limit brings new possibilities to the platform, it also poses challenges. Longer posts can be tedious to read, especially considering the fast-paced nature of Twitter. Rival platforms such as Mastodon and Bluesky have lower character limits per post, suggesting that Twitter may need to consider ways to improve the reading experience for its users.

Why Snakes Are Crawling into Houses in New Moscow Due to Heat and Drought

Snakes Crawling into Houses in Moscow

Snakes Crawling into Houses in Moscow

The head of the Department of Biological Diversity and Environmental Protection of the Moscow Region, Sergei Burmistrov, said that because of the heat, snakes are crawling into the houses of New Moscow.

Snakes Seek Shelter from Heat

In an interview with the Russian news agency Novosti, he said that due to the high air temperature and drought, snakes crawl into houses to get drunk and cool off, and that the species that has been repeatedly seen is called grass snake, and it is not poisonous and does not represent any danger.

He continued: “The snakes are mostly active and because of the hot and dry weather, they are looking for wet places. Therefore, they can be seen near the entrances of buildings, and they can crawl under the foundation of the building, where there is humidity or near reservoirs and ponds to drink water and cool the body.”

Not Limited to Moscow Region

According to him, snakes can be seen not only in the Moscow region, but also in other regions.

He added: “We get a lot of complaints about the presence of snakes in different places, but we do not hunt them, because they are snakes that do not harm anyone and do not attack a person if he does not touch them.”

Quest 3

And in early June, Zuckerberg unveiled the new Quest 3 virtual reality and mixed reality glasses, which come as a successor to the Quest 2 glasses.

Apple compete

However, the price of Apple glasses is three times the price of Meta’s most expensive glasses.

TikTok Testing New In-App Trendy Beat Shopping Section for Products Shipped by ByteDance Subsidiary

TikTok, the popular social media platform, has been making headlines recently with the news of its in-app shopping section called “Trendy Beat”. Currently being tested in the UK, Trendy Beat is a shopping feature that showcases popular products that have appeared in trending videos. Interestingly, the feature includes products such as tools for ear wax extraction, which have gained immense popularity over time. Although this feature is not yet being tested in the US, TikTok has filed a trademark application for Trendy Beat in the country, indicating the possibility of expansion in the future.

TikTok’s e-commerce strategy, until now, has been focused on letting brands sell on the platform through TikTok Shop. However, with the introduction of Trendy Beat, the platform is now selling its own products, which puts it in direct competition with e-commerce giants like Amazon and Shein. While TikTok’s e-commerce ventures are still in their early phases in the US, the app has already influenced users’ shopping habits. The introduction of the Trendy Beat feature could further push sales by providing direct access to a discovery and purchasing experience within the app.

Overall, with the introduction of Trendy Beat, TikTok is taking a significant step toward becoming a major player in the e-commerce industry. It is an exciting development for TikTok users who can now shop for popular products directly within the app, without having to switch to another platform.

WhatsApp Business Hits 200 Million Monthly Active Users Launches New Features for Small Businesses

WhatsApp Business Surpasses 200 Million Monthly Active Users

Meta announced today that WhatsApp Business, its app designed specifically for small businesses, has crossed the mark of 200 million monthly active users — up from 50 million in 2020. As the company is pursuing its “year of efficiency,” it also launched features like easier ad creation and a personalized message service for WhatsApp Business users.

Mark Zuckerberg is pouring billions into developing a metaverse. In order to offset that, the company is ramping up revenue generation from other avenues such as WhatsApp.

Creating Ads Without a Facebook Account

The Meta-owned chat app said that, starting today, WhatsApp Business users will be able to create “click-to-WhatsApp” ads without a Facebook account. The company noted that sellers can create, purchase, and publish ads for Facebook and Instagram directly from within the app. Last year, during Meta’s Q3 earnings call, Zuckerberg mentioned that “click-to-WhatsApp” ads surpassed the annual revenue run rate of $1.5 billion with 80% year-on-year growth.

Personalized Messages for Customers

WhatsApp Business is also adding another paid feature that lets merchants automate the process of sending personalized messages to their customers. The company didn’t share the pricing details as WhatsApp said it will start testing the feature “soon.” The screengrabs shared by the company indicate that businesses will be able to send different messages to different customer lists. For instance, a seller can send a discount code to new customers with a purchase button.

Increased Revenue through Paid Messaging

Over the last few months, Meta has made concrete steps towards increasing revenue earned through paid messaging. In February, it announced changes in the pricing structure and messaging categories on WhatsApp. These categories included utility, authentication (to send one-time passcodes), marketing, and user-initiated service conversations. “I shared last quarter that click-to-message ads reached a $10 billion revenue run rate. And since then, the number of businesses using our other business messaging service — paid messaging on WhatsApp — has grown by 40% quarter-over-quarter,” Zuckerberg said in the Q1 2023 earnings call.

Growth in Messaging Revenue

Currently, the company doesn’t declare separate revenue for WhatsApp, but clubs it with the “other” category. In the quarter ending in March, Meta said that the WhatsApp Business platform had a strong growth in messaging revenue, but it was offset by “a decline in other line items” — resulting in a 5% dip for the category year-over-year.

Expanding Payments Business

WhatsApp has also taken steps to foster its payments business on the platform. In April, it introduced the ability to pay merchants for users in Brazil. A month later, the company introduced similar functionality in Singapore. Earlier this month, WhatsApp launched the channels feature to facilitate broadcast conversations from different organizations. At that time, the company also mentioned that it is exploring ways to integrate payments into channels.
