Ancient Roman Mausoleum Discovered Near Borough Market in South London

Near Borough Market in south London, archaeologists have discovered an ancient Roman mausoleum.

Excavations Uncover Roman Tomb

The Guardian reports that during ongoing excavations in Southwark, archaeologists have found an ancient Roman tomb near Borough Market and London Bridge station.

Mausoleum Features

According to the newspaper, archaeologists did not find a sarcophagus in the mausoleum, but found 80 graves around it.

Archaeologists have described this building as the best of all such ancient Roman buildings discovered in Britain. There is a floor and walls, and in the middle is a mosaic surrounded by a raised platform on which the tombs are located. Under it, traces of an older mosaic with a similar motif were found – a flower surrounded by several circles.

Purpose and History

According to experts, the building could have been completely dismantled in the Middle Ages. They believe that it was a large two-story building that belonged to wealthy Romanians and served as a family cemetery.
