Russian Kurchatov Institute Scientists Awarded State Prize for Antineutrino Research in Nuclear Reactors

Russian Scientists Awarded State Prize for Research in Field of Antineutrinos

Scientists of the Russian Kurchatov Institute were awarded a state award for research in the field of antineutrinos in nuclear reactors.

Outstanding Contribution to Neutrino Research

The award was presented to them by Russian President Vladimir Putin in the Kremlin on the occasion of Russia Day. Scientists have made an outstanding contribution to the development of neutrino research in the field and created a scientific and technical basis for their practical application in nuclear energy.

State Prize in Science and Technology

Scientists of the National Research Center (“Kurchatov Institute”) Mikhail Skorochvatov and Vladimir Kopeikin were awarded the 2022 State Prize in Science and Technology. The names of the award winners were announced at a press conference at the Russian TASS agency.

Pioneers in Antineutrino Research

At the presentation of the State Prize laureates, Aide to the President of Russia Andrei Fursenko noted that they began their research in the field of antineutrinos half a century ago and, in fact, determined the direction of development of this scientific path on a global scale.

Contribution to Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Materials

In addition to the main scientific contribution, scientists have made a very significant contribution to practical issues, as they were able to use sensors to measure the amount of fuel used in nuclear power plants, which led to the identification of methods for monitoring the non-proliferation of nuclear materials.

World’s First Technology for Telemetry of Energy

The memorandum accompanying the scientists’ achievements states that they have developed the world’s first technology for telemetry of energy, energy production and the isotopic composition of the core of a nuclear reactor by detecting antineutrinos in the reactor.

Specialists in Antineutrino Physics

As part of scientific research, Mikhail Skorokhvatov, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Head of the Department of Neutrino Physics at the Kurchatov Institute, has developed highly sensitive detectors for detecting antineutrinos in a nuclear reactor. Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, leading researcher of the Kurchatov Institute Vladimir Kopeikin conducted promising studies of the cumulative spectra of antineutrinos and (beta) particles from fissile fragments of uranium and plutonium, which formed the basis of recent studies in the antineutrino field in a nuclear reactor, which made it possible to form a new direction in science, which is the applied physics of antineutrinos.
