While it’s a common theme in movies, TV shows, and books, it’s still weird to think about the end of humanity. But Carlton Basmagian, an associate professor of community and regional planning and urban design at Iowa State University, has considered such possibilities.

Lots of Silence

If people just disappeared from the world and you could go back to Earth and see what happened a year later, the first thing you would notice would not be the eyes, but the ears. The world will be quiet. And you will understand how much noise people make. Our buildings are noisy. Our cars are noisy. Our sky is noisy. All this noise will stop.

And weather. In a year without people, the sky will be bluer and the air cleaner. Wind and rain will cleanse the surface of the earth; And all man-made smog and dust will disappear.

Home Sweet Home

Enter your house in a year and hope you don’t get thirsty because your taps won’t have water. Water systems require constant pumping. And if there is no one in the public water supply to operate the machines that pump water, then there is no water in the house.

But the water that was in the pipes when everyone was gone will remain there during the first winter – so that in the first cold snap, wet snow will freeze the water in the pipes and blow them out.

And there will be no electricity. Power plants will stop working because no one will monitor them and provide fuel supplies. So your house will be dark, without lights, TV, telephones or computers.

And your house will be dusty. In fact, there is dust in the air all the time, but we do not notice it, because our air conditioning systems and heaters blow air around it. And as you move through the rooms in your home, you also keep dust on the go. But as soon as all this stops, the air in your house will still be still, and dust will settle everywhere.

And the grass on your lawn will grow – and grow, and grow, until it becomes tall and resilient and does not stop growing. There will be new weeds, and everywhere.

And in your area, the creatures wandered and searched. First, the smallest: mice and marmots. Later, larger animals will appear – deer, wolves and bears. Maybe not in the first year, but it will come with time.

In Your City

In just one year, concrete things – roads, bridges, buildings – will look the same. Come back, for example, in a decade, and cracks will appear in them, along which small plants will squirm. This is because the earth is constantly moving.

And with that movement comes pressure, and with that pressure comes cracks.

Eventually, the roads will crack so badly that they look like broken glass, and even trees will grow through them.

And bridges with metal supports slowly rust. The beams and nails holding the bridges together will also rust. But large concrete bridges and interstate highways, also made of concrete, will stand for centuries.

The dams and canals built by humans on the rivers and streams of the world will be destroyed. Farms will return to nature. And the plants we eat will start to disappear. There will be no more corn, potatoes or tomatoes.

Farm animals will be easy prey for bears, wolves and leopards. What will happen to the pets? Cats will become feral, that is, they will become wild again, although they will be hunted by many large animals. And most dogs won’t survive either.

Like Ancient Rome

A thousand years from now, this inhabited world that you remember will still be vaguely recognizable. Some things will remain. This will depend on the type of material it is made from and the climate in which it will exist.

The apartment building, movie theater or mall you once knew will collapse like a relic of a lost civilization. The Roman Empire collapsed over 1500 years ago, but some of its remnants can still be seen today.

And at the very least, the sudden disappearance of people from the world will show how lousy we have treated our land.

It will also show us that the world we live in today cannot exist without us and that we cannot survive if we do not take care of it.

To maintain a civilization, this civilization, like everything else, requires constant maintenance.
