Joe Biden Calls for Addressing Risks of Artificial Intelligence
Introduction
US President Joe Biden on Tuesday called for the need to address the risks of artificial intelligence to national security and the economy, adding that he would seek expert advice on this matter.
“My administration is committed to protecting the rights and safety of Americans while protecting privacy, addressing bias and misinformation, and making sure AI systems are secure before they are launched,” Biden said in an event in San Francisco.
And Biden met with a group of civil society leaders, who in they had previously criticized the influence of Big Tech, to discuss artificial intelligence.
“I wanted to hear from the experts directly,” he added.
Many governments are investigating how to mitigate the risks of an emerging technology, which has increased its investment and popularity following the launch of the Microsoft-backed (Open AI) company, the chatbot ‘ChatGBT’.
Biden’s meeting was attended by Tristan Harris, executive director of the Center for Humane Technology, Algorithmic Justice League founder Joey Bulamwini, and Stanford University professor Rob Reich.
Global Regulatory Efforts
Regulators around the world are rushing to establish rules governing the use of generative AI, which can generate text and images.
Biden also recently discussed the issue of artificial intelligence with other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose government will hold questThis year’s first global security summit for this technology.
International Collaboration
Biden is expected to discuss the matter with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his current visit to the United States.
EU lawmakers last week approved changes to the draft AI rules proposed by the European Commission in a bid to establish a standard overall for the technology used in anything from automated factories to auto self-driving to chatbots.
