Giant Snail Species Leads to Quarantine in Miramar, Florida
The appearance of a giant snail species “Lisacatina fulica” in the American city of Miramar, Florida, led to the introduction of quarantine in the area.
Restrictive Measures to Prevent Spread
Restrictive measures were introduced in an area of 5 square kilometers after only one giant snail was found there. In order to prevent the spread of these dangerous creatures, the authorities issued an order to treat the area with chemicals.
Precautions for Citizens
Citizens are allowed to leave the quarantine zone but are not allowed to return with plant material potentially containing snail eggs.
Introduction and Threat to Agriculture
Liscatina fulica arrived in the state from the Hawaiian archipelago in the 1960s. These creatures pose a threat to the agricultural industry by eating over 500 species of plants, vegetables, and fruits. Each lays up to 1200 eggs per year.
Health Concerns
In addition, Liscatina fulica can infect humans with the parasite Angiostrongylus cantonensis, which causes severe brain disease.
