X Implements New Design for Crowdsourced Fact-Checking
X, formerly known as Twitter, made an important change this week to its crowdsourced fact-checking feature called Community Notes. The new design allows users to review all proposed notes related to a post, rather than just the one they are currently reviewing. This tweak aims to encourage contributors to consider different viewpoints and potentially change their minds before leaving a rating.
This subtle change could have a significant impact on Community Notes contributors. Instead of simply agreeing with the crowd’s opinion on a note’s helpfulness, contributors will now have the opportunity to evaluate other proposed notes. This expanded perspective might lead to more informed ratings and a more accurate representation of crowd-sourced fact-checks displayed publicly below X’s posts.
X emphasizes the need for contributors to have as much helpful information as possible when rating notes, which serves as the motivation for this alteration.
Although the update has received positive feedback from users, its practical implications with respect to changing contributors’ decision-making remains unknown. The implementation of this feature presents alternative points of view to contributors, potentially leading to shifts in opinions or increased confusion regarding which proposed notes are the most helpful and accurate.
X provided an example where both of the presented notes could be considered helpful. One note corrects misinformation in a tweet by stating that whales are mammals, while the other suggests that a note is not necessary because the account is a parody. Both notes are technically true, but the latter may encourage Community Note contributors to remove contextual information from a tweet.
The situation becomes more complex if the parody account is of a political nature, and the statements that “don’t require correction” are actually misinformation spread by one side. Removing the note simply because it is a parody account could be more detrimental if users fail to check the account’s bio, where it explicitly states the account’s parody nature.
Originally launched as Birdwatch in 2021 before Elon Musk’s acquisition of the platform, Community Notes is one of X’s most innovative features. The system employs an algorithm that seeks consensus among groups with differing viewpoints before highlighting crowd-sourced fact-checks to other users. Additionally, Community Notes contributors must demonstrate their capability by rating notes as helpful or not helpful, earning points when their ratings align with the larger community’s final decision.
Under Musk’s ownership, the system has undergone several updates, including the recent introduction of Community Notes for videos, as well as other changes aimed at streamlining the process and combating low-quality contributions.
