iOS 17 Update: Compatibility and Features

The iOS 17 update was made available to most iPhones on Sept. 18, but some people are not getting the update. If you have an iPhone from 2017 or before, unfortunately, you will not be able to enjoy the new features in iOS 17.

How to Check if Your iPhone is Compatible

If you are unsure about the model of your iPhone, you can easily check by navigating to the Settings app. Open the app and tap on General, then select About. Next to Model Name, you’ll find the information about your specific iPhone model.

Which iPhones are Compatible with iOS 17?

Apple has confirmed that the following iPhone models are compatible with iOS 17:

• iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max
• iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
• iPhone SE (2nd generation)
• iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max

Which iPhone Models Won’t Run iOS 17?

Unfortunately, the latest iOS 17 update is not supported on the following iPhone models:

• iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus
• iPhone X

Furthermore, Apple stopped providing feature upgrades for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 7 series with the release of iOS 16 last year. These devices can still run iOS 15.

What to Do if Your iPhone Isn’t Compatible?

If your iPhone is not listed among the compatible models mentioned above, it means it won’t support iOS 17, and you won’t receive a notification to download the newest software. For example, if you own an iPhone X or iPhone 8, the latest software version you can use on your device is iOS 16.

Even though older iPhones won’t support the latest iOS version or receive new features, they will remain functional. They will also continue to receive security updates for iOS 16. Apple released the latest security update for iOS 15 in July 2023 and will continue to release iOS 16 security updates in the future to ensure your device’s safety.
