Meta Disputes Media Report on Ads in WhatsApp, Analysts Speculate on Monetization

Meta Disputes Reports of Ads on WhatsApp

In a recent media report, Meta has denied claims that it is exploring the idea of bringing advertisements to its popular messaging app, WhatsApp.

False Claims

The Financial Times claimed that some teams at Meta had evaluated the possibility of displaying ads in lists of conversations with contacts on the WhatsApp home screen. However, WhatsApp responded with a statement clarifying that they were not testing or working on such a feature and had no plans in that direction.

Speculation and Monetization

For a while now, analysts have speculated on the possibility of Meta introducing ads on WhatsApp. As the social conglomerate seeks ways to monetize the service, which has a user base of over 2 billion globally, Meta’s acquisition, Instagram, has already made significant progress in terms of monetization.

A Different Approach

Despite these speculations, Meta has thus far resisted the idea of including ads within the WhatsApp app. Instead, it relies on WhatsApp Business, an offering designed for merchants that requires them to pay for certain services. WhatsApp Business has gained over 200 million monthly active users.

Analysts at AllianceBernstein noted in a recent client note, “With WhatsApp Business users reaching 200M MAU, and GenAI customer service tools being tested out, Meta appears to be taking steps towards monetizing the 2Bn+ active users on WhatsApp. Click to Message is already running at a 10B+ revenue run rate while training both the users and businesses to interact within WhatsApp.”
