Analysis of the people in the videos also showed that older people had much lower odds of sleepwalking than adults and children. But elderly males were 40 times more likely than adults and children to perform aggressive movements in bed. Older adults showed emotional behaviors such as crying less than adults. Risky behaviors, such as leaving the house or driving while asleep, were significantly lower among older adults.

The researchers hope their findings will raise awareness of age- and sex-related risk factors. Although they acknowledge the limitations of simply studying YouTube videos, with no demographic or historical data, they are turning to more comprehensive methods for future studies.

Business at the Cryonics Institute’s lab in Michigan is increasing, leaving it at capacity and forcing patients to be stored at a new center nearby. Between 10 and 20 spaces have been filled in the expanded storage facility.

Affordability and Accessibility

At the Michigan facility, chefs, students, secretaries, professors and pets are among those stored in liquid nitrogen. The center prides itself on being affordable for the average person, with the price for full body preservation starting at $28,000, which is usually paid for through life insurance.

Cryonics technology (deep freezing of dead bodies) is a global phenomenon. While 1,374 of the 1,975 patients stored at the Michigan facility are Americans and 128 are British, according to the institute’s member statistics.

News circulating about a cloned monkey that managed to live for two years without any health problems has sparked widespread debate about what this might mean for humans.

Cloned Monkey Grows Up Healthy

The monkey, a rhesus macaque named ReTro, was born in China on July 16, 2020. This species shares about 97.5% of its genes with humans.

The cloned rhesus monkey has entered the age of three, Dr. Falong Lu, a member of the cloning team at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing, told New Scientist. “So far, we have not noticed any health problems in him through our routine physical examinations.”

Challenges of Cloning Mammals

Historically, cloning monkeys has proven difficult, despite success with other mammals, such as Dolly the sheep in 1996. Scientists were able to clone the monkey by modifying the process that led to the production of Dolly the sheep, which was very special because, unlike the baby monkey, it was cloned from an adult cell, which is the desired goal for those hoping to recreate living (or extinct) animals. Most cloning successes occur when small embryonic cells are cloned at a very early stage, a simpler challenge, but by no means simple.

One of the major problems with cloning living mammals is the age and complexity of their DNA. From the moment the egg is fertilized by the sperm, it goes through many complex stages.

Complexity of Cloning Technology

From early in the womb, cells begin to specialize and transform into one type or another (muscle cell, nerve cell, skin cell). Now, experts in the field are working on how to “reset” these epigenetic marks, essentially wiping their memory so you can go back to the beginning and start the whole process again. But this is not the only problem scientists have found with mammalian cloning.

Despite decades of research in this field, cloning technology is still far from reliable. There are far more failures than success stories.

Implications of Cloning for Humans

Rules and laws prohibiting the cloning of human embryos vary in different parts of the world, but scientists will not be allowed anywhere to implant a cloned embryo into the uterus, and there is little evidence so far that cloning human embryos is successful.

According to experts, cloning is not just about recreating a living person or pet. However, one of the main hopes for human health is the cloning of stem cells for medical treatment, transplanting cells, tissues and even entire organs into the person from which they were cloned.

Chinese Biologists Successfully Clone a Rhesus Monkey

Chinese biologists succeeded in cloning a rhesus monkey using the method of transferring the nucleus of a somatic cell into the cytoplasm of an egg, which British scientists used to clone “Dolly the sheep” in 1996.

Scientific Breakthrough

The journal Nature Communications notes that, according to the scientists, “the somatic cell nuclear transfer method had already been used successfully to clone a long-tailed macaque. But rhesus monkeys were not cloned in the same way. So we devised an approach that greatly increased the probability of successful cloning, allowing us to produce a healthy male,” a clone of this animal.

It is noteworthy that in 2018, a team of biologists headed by Professor Sun Qiang, Director of the Primate Study Center in Beijing, managed to clone two long-tailed macaques. But they were not successful despite numerous attempts to clone the rhesus macaque in the same way.

But now thanks to improvements in the cloning method, by replacing some of the cells in the cloned embryos with their counterparts from embryos obtained using artificial insemination, they have successfully cloned a rhesus macaque.

Implications for Medical and Biological Research

It turned out that this step, as it turned out later, greatly increased the probability of the embryos surviving, and thanks to it, scientists were able to obtain 11 supposedly viable embryos, 7 of which were implanted in the wombs of the surrogate mothers. But only two of the cloned embryos took root, and only one of them was born.

According to the researchers, this male rhesus macaque has been living for more than two years, is in good health, and has no obvious or hidden congenital defects in the functioning of his body. This gives hope that subsequent improvements in cloning techniques will allow scientists to begin cloning large numbers of primates for medical and biological research that currently use ordinary monkeys.

Findings

“Previous studies have shown that the types of microbes on our skin change in a fairly predictable way with age,” said lead researcher Si Jin Song. “Our skin also changes physiologically with age. But there is a difference in what this looks like in individuals.”

He continued: “Using advanced statistical methods, we were able to separate the microbes associated with signs of skin aging from those associated with age simply as a chronological number.”

Impacts

The analysis revealed two main results. First, the team found a positive association between the skin microbiome and crow’s feet, a sign of aging. Secondly, they found a negative relationship between the range of bacteria on the skin and the loss of moisture in the skin.

Although the team couldn’t say with certainty that one is caused by the other, they are excited about what it means for the next steps in anti-aging research.

Future Research

Co-author Qian Cheng, head of North American Advanced Research at L’Oréal, said: “This research is pioneering in identifying new microbial biomarkers associated with visible signs of aging such as crow’s feet. It represents an important step towards developing technologies for healthier, more youthful skin.”

Co-author Rob Knight added: “By confirming the relationship between the microbiome and skin health, we have laid the foundation for further studies that discover specific microbiome biomarkers related to skin aging, and one day, we will demonstrate how to modify them to create new, targeted recommendations for skin health.”

In coral reef ecosystems, larger fish and other marine animals eat smaller fish. This means that small fish form the base of the food web, providing energy for larger fish and other creatures. Even wild plants can benefit from the presence of fish. On the West Coast of the United States, salmon returning to small streams after spending several years at sea act as a nutrient conveyor belt.

Human Dependence on Fish

Humans also depend on fish as a food source. Fish and other seafood products are an important source of protein for about 3 billion people.

When the fish themselves forage for food, they can create and maintain important habitats for other organisms. In coral reef ecosystems, plant-eating fish control algae growth by constantly grazing on it.

Without the help of plant-eating fish, the algae would grow quickly and suffocate the coral, effectively killing it.
