Climate scientists argue that global warming is reducing the difference between daytime and nighttime air temperatures.
Scientists have not yet focused on such a phenomenon caused by climate change, as they made their calculations and long-term forecasts taking into account only the average temperature.
The difference between day and night temperatures is important for many processes occurring on Earth.
For example, this difference is important for planting and harvesting, so that plants do not freeze, for space heating, for human and animal health, since cool summer nights significantly reduce the effect of heat on the human body. But if the temperature does not decrease at night, problems can arise.
And scientists from several universities in the US, Japan and China decided to thoroughly study this problem. To do this, they used a supercomputer from the University of Tsukuba in Japan, where they prepared a very detailed model for forecasts with an accuracy of two square kilometers, knowing that climate models usually guarantee an accuracy of 100 square kilometers, and also used data on temperature and other weather parameters at the beginning twenty-first century 2005-2014 and climate change scenarios by the end of this century. They also took into account the amount of precipitation and soil moisture.
What were the results of the forecasts in the end? The air temperature will rise day and night. This is not new news. However, it appears that in many parts of the world daytime temperatures will rise more slowly than nighttime temperatures.
The reason lies in the clouds, which will become more, which will not allow the sun to heat the air during the day. At night it will be the opposite, as you will protect the Earth from rapid cooling. As a result, the difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures will be smaller than it is now. Will the difference be significant? – No, only 0.25-0.5 degrees Celsius. And this despite the fact that the exact figures depend on local characteristics.
“It’s very difficult to predict how clouds will change due to global warming,” said Professor Dave Newgy of the University of Texas at Austin.
While his colleague from the University of Tsukuba in Japan, Xuan Kwan, said at the same time that he was sure that clouds and clouds play a big role in climate change and daily temperatures, as they affect the amount of solar radiation and heat exchange between the surface of the Earth or the ocean and atmosphere. The difference between day and night air temperatures is important for human, animal and plant life.
