The Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences said that the Klyuchevskaya volcano woke up from sleep and began releasing volcanic bombs.
Considered to be the highest active volcano in Eurasia, the source expects fiery lava flows to erupt soon from this volcano.
On Sunday morning, the Kamchatka Geophysical Service reported that last night a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the eastern coast of Kamchatka, after which a glow appeared in the crater of the Klyuchevskaya volcano.
Aleksey Ozerov, director of the institute, said: “The eruptions began at the top of the Klyuchevskoy volcano, and at present, there are individual releases of incendiary bombs at a frequency of up to 10 explosions per hour. Due to the great depth of this volcano’s cavity – about 200 meters – only some of them are visible on the edge. The rest are only due to the glow above the crater.”
According to scientists, the eruption will intensify later, and lava flows are expected, as well as the formation of mudflows that will cover the riverbeds in the area of the volcano.
