The Russian company Atomflot announced the completion of sea trials of a new nuclear-powered icebreaker being developed as part of the state project 22220.
“Sea trials of the new Russian nuclear icebreaker Ural, which is being developed as part of the state project 22220, have been completed,” the company said in a statement.
“The ship began the last stage of testing on October 14, and the tests were successful,” the message says.
And the Ural is the third nuclear-powered icebreaker developed by Russia as part of the 22220 project, and work on its development began in 2016, and it was first launched in May 2019.
As part of the mentioned project, Russia is developing ships as icebreakers capable of escorting ships and sea convoys from the Arctic regions, performing rescue operations and giving way to ships in waters with ice thickness up to 2.8 m.
These ships are equipped with autonomous nuclear power plants with a capacity of 60 megawatts, and their service life is 320,000 hours. The length of these ships is 173.3 m, width 34 m, height 15.2 m, and their displacement is equivalent to 33,500 m. tons.
