Twitter on Saturday launched an $ 8-per-month subscription to get the blue check mark of verified accounts, as part of a review of the platform verification system led by new owner Elon Musk.
In an iOS update on Apple devices, Twitter announced that users who “subscribe now” can have a blue check mark next to their name, “just like celebrities, companies and politicians.”
The change marks the end of Twitter’s usual verification system, launched in 2009 to prevent the identities of celebrities and politicians from being faked.
Prior to this development, Twitter had approximately 423,000 verified accounts, many of which were of journalists from around the world who were verified by the company regardless of the number of followers.
Experts raised concerns about changing the app’s verification system, which, while flawed, helped Twitter’s 238 million daily users determine if the accounts they got information from were genuine.
This comes the day after the company began firing employees to cut costs. Half of the company’s 7,500 employees have already been laid off, Yoel Roth, the company’s head of safety and integrity, said via the app.
