TikTok May Be Banned in the United States If Its Chinese Owners Don’t Sell Their Share

According to reports, the Biden administration has threatened to impose a U.S. ban on TikTok unless its Chinese owners sell their part in the short-form video-sharing app.

Initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, the demand is claimed to have come from the Committee on Foreign Investment in the U.S. This multi-agency federal task group supervises the dangers to national security posed by international investments.

That is the most recent action in a campaign against the ByteDance-owned app, which has already been the subject of restrictions from the government. The TikTok app has been banned by dozens of state governments since the Biden administration’s directive to remove it from government devices in February.

With the Trump administration’s failed attempt to ban the app from U.S. app stores in September 2020, TikTok has been a target of American regulators. Republicans and Democrats recently asked for authorities to implement stronger data-gathering limitations or to outright ban the app from the U.S., which raised concerns about the app.

ByteDance filed a plan in August 2022 outlining how it would keep the Chinese government from gaining access to information on U.S. users and give the American government control over the platform. Yet, negotiations between TikTok and Washington have come to a standstill.

In related news, the U.K.’s National Cyber Security Center has recommended that TikTok be blocked on devices used by politicians and employees of the British government. The app has already been blocked from government phones in Canada, Belgium, and the European Commission.
