Early last year, WhatsApp added the Communities feature, making it easy to get in touch with thousands of people and even better as a communication app. But this also means that people we don’t know very well can chat with and call us. And dealing with random crypto fanatic group invites is already a pain. You can already report and block spammers, but there’s no way to stop calls from unknown numbers. WhatsApp is working on the way to mute unknown callers, which is good news if you want to stop getting calls from people you don’t know all the time.
The unannounced feature was found by WABetaInfo, which had already found an experimental feature called Newsletters that was meant to make it easier for groups to talk to each other. The outlet says the newsletter feature will have a drawback because it will always show the creator’s phone number to the public. This means that any WhatsApp community member can contact you even if you don’t want them to. The new mute switch, which was found in a recent Android beta but wasn’t easy to spot, will supposedly be
As you can see in the picture below, the switch to mute calls is in the Settings menu. Once the feature is turned on, calls from unknown numbers should no longer ring your phone. But the calls will still appear in the call list and notification center, so you won’t be completely clueless about who tried to contact you.
Spam has been WhatsApp’s bane for a long time, and it takes many forms, including ads masquerading as useful services. This service was seen testing a quick way to block spam messages earlier this year. Even though WhatsApp can deal with spam messages and calls that have already reached you, it has been hard to stop them in the first place.
Currently, it looks like the mute button is still being worked on and is seen as a possible solution to WhatsApp’s spam problems. Unfortunately, no one knows when Meta, which owns the messaging platform, will let everyone use it. It will likely need to go through some public beta testing first.
Given the high volume of spam and unwanted calls on WhatsApp, we’d bet many of you will be curious to give this feature a shot.
