Apple Store Employees in Maryland Want a Raise and the Chance to Keep Tips

According to Bloomberg, workers at the Apple Store in Towson, Maryland, who are represented by a union, are in the process of negotiating with the company for new perks this week. Among their demands are increases in base pay and tips, as well as modifications to the laws governing time off.

Employee representatives have demanded increases of up to ten percent, and they want Apple to establish a tipping system that would give customers the choice to offer 3%, 5%, or bespoke gratuities when checking out with an in-store credit card transaction. In addition, employee representatives have requested that Apple boost the minimum wage to at least $15 per hour. “This will enable grateful customers to express gratitude for a job well done without any obligations,” the union stated. “This will allow thankful patrons the ability to express gratitude for a job well done.” The number of hours each employee had put in would determine how much of the tip money they received.

The labor union is proposing that employees who work more than eight hours per day or forty hours per week be paid an additional amount and that employees who work overtime on the weekends be paid an increased amount. Employees also want higher pay for a larger number of holidays, an increase of one dollar an hour for workers who become first-aid certified, up to 34 weeks of severance pay for workers who are laid off, extended paid bereavement leave of up to 45 days per year, with pets and close friends to be included in the allowed time off, and expanded vacation pay. In addition, employees want to see an increase in the number of holidays for which they receive higher pay.

The union stated that “these are initial proposals” and that it is aware that this “is a negotiation.” The Apple retail outlet in Towson, Maryland, became one of just two to unionize last summer, and it is currently the only one in the state.
