WhatsApp Testing New ‘Channels’ Feature for Sending Messages to Large Number of Users

Introduction

The instant messaging application ‘WhatsApp’ is currently testing a new feature called ‘Channels’, which allows you to send messages to a large number of users, according to recent reports.

According to the “WABetaInfo” website, which is interested in the “WhatsApp” news, the application has started testing the “channels” function in the beta version of the application on iPhone and Android.

This feature will allow you to send messages to an unlimited number of followers who join the channel while maintaining privacy which means that the channel followers will not be in able to know the telephone number of the channel owners.

It should be noted that the channels will be public and all users will probably join, hence the messages in they may not be end-to-end encrypted as always in the app.

Only channel owners will have the ability to send messages within channels, while other members will only receive messages and may give them some options to interact with messages.

WhatsApp will also allow you to search and access channels by their unique identifier.

This functionality is very similar to the channels functionality in the competing instant messaging application “Telegram”, which has been around since 2015, and it appears that Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, will port the channels functionality in terms of name and work mechanism as per “Telegram”.

Updates from channels can appear alongside statuses in the same tab and can be moved to appear in the message box alongside other conversations.

Telegram channels differ from groups, as groups allow messages to be exchanged between members within the group and there is an upper limit for members within a group which does not exceed 1024 members in the group.

Beta Testing

Currently, the functionality of the channel in WhatsApp is in trial phase and will later be released to the public after the completion of the beta phase.
