The Chief Executive Officer of Apple, Tim Cook, offered some opinion regarding artificial intelligence today, in the midst of the rising popularity of ChatGPT and other chatbots.
During today’s quarterly earnings call for Apple, Tim Cook said that the potential of artificial intelligence is “very interesting.” However, he also noted that there are “a number of issues that need to be sorted out” with the technology and that it is “very important to be deliberate and thoughtful” regarding how artificial intelligence is used. Cook was speaking about Apple’s recent financial performance.
Cook stated that Apple has already implemented artificial intelligence and machine learning across a number of its products and services, citing examples such as the fall detection and crash detection apps for the Apple Watch, in addition to the ECG app on the Apple Watch. In addition, he stated that Apple will proceed to incorporate artificial intelligence into its products on a “very thoughtful basis.”
The New York Times stated in March that the excitement surrounding chatbots highlights how Siri and other traditional voice assistants have “squandered their lead in the A.I. race,” since Siri’s capability remains significantly more limited than that of chatbots despite the fact that it was launched more than a decade ago. According to a report that was published by The Information one month ago, Apple staff “widely criticize Siri for its shortcomings” and have proposed significant language model upgrades that they hope will be ready to launch in an iOS version that will be launched the following year.
