Reports Show Humans Have Crossed Six of Nine Planetary Boundaries, Says Expert
Recent reports reveal that human activity has already exceeded six of the nine planetary boundaries that determine the sustainability of human life on Earth.
Green Office Sustainability Day at Leiden University
Leiden University recently held the Green Office Sustainability Day, during which the topic of planetary boundaries was discussed. A group of Earth system and environmental scientists proposed the term “planetary boundary” in 2009 to indicate the Earth system processes containing environmental boundaries.
The Nine Planetary Boundaries
The nine planetary boundaries that ensure the sustainability of life on Earth are climate change, biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, biochemical processes, water security, land use, ozone depletion, aerosols, and chemical pollution. Six of these limits have already been breached, according to recent reports. Going beyond these boundaries increases the risk of irreversible environmental changes.
Systematic Changes Required
Jan Willem Ehrismann, Professor of Environmental Sustainability, emphasized the need for systemic changes at the Green Office Sustainability Day. These changes range from altering our food and energy sources to adjusting how we live and consume. All the boundaries are interconnected, so exceeding nitrogen content limits, for example, can lead to a decrease in biodiversity and produce adverse effects on the climate. Social boundaries are also crucial, including education, healthcare, and social equality, among other factors.
Communities Finding Solutions Locally
One approach that could support the planet’s sustainability is to empower communities to find local solutions. Ehresmann’s Livable Planet program includes the Polder Lab, where farmers and citizens collaborate to learn how to manage peatlands sustainably and profitably. He confirmed that communities can often achieve more than their original goal if given accountability over their efforts.
Conclusion
As planetary and social boundaries are interconnected, addressing them comprehensively is crucial if human life on Earth is to remain possible for future generations. Making systemic changes and empowering communities to find solutions locally are two ways to work toward this goal.
