Google has a talent for nailing the fundamental aspects of new software-based services in the first few revisions, but the majority of its apps are devoid of other features. Although one of the greatest note-taking applications available, Google Keep is no exception, nailing the fundamentals and offering little extra. We were fortunate to see hints of a significant change last year, and we now have our first glimpse at how rich text formatting might function in Google Keep.
Snippets and icons from Google Keep hinted to the possibility of rich text formatting options in May and June of last year. Currently, a video exhibiting these functionalities in use has been uploaded by AssembleDebug on Twitter. It’s interesting that while they are still being developed, the features aren’t currently accessible to beta testers. Only certain flags in the app code can enable these formatting options.
The news of Google Keep getting text formatting support was spotted almost a year ago but there was no preview/video of the feature except some string and icons.

Text formatting shortcuts are displayed in a bar just above your keyboard. The formatting options in Google Keep are similar to those in other document editors and include bold, italics, underline, and strikethrough. A button to switch to normal size text, marked by Aa, and two sizes for headings, denoted by H1 and H2, are also available. The feature may offer a variety of advantages, from improved note display to proper focus on particular entries like “Red bell peppers.” The multi-level headers may even be used to catalog a recipe that includes a built-in shopping list.
Google Keep doesn’t just lack text formatting options, though. Support for hyperlinking to websites and external material in the app is significantly lacking. When you eventually get down to working on that DIY project, it will be simpler to locate videos of specific how-to tips on YouTube if the links are prepared. We would love for Google to add this to Keep’s changelog, but we don’t anticipate anything happening right away. If the upgrades to Google Chat are any indication, hyperlinking support is typically added to an app after Google introduces support for text formatting; Chat received formatting in January and hyperlinking support in July.
The text formatting choices in Keep don’t have a particular release date, but they seem to be ready for prime time and should appear on the app as soon as they become available on Keep’s online interface. You won’t miss out on features if you move platforms in this manner.
