New Technologies Alert: Microphone Hacking Threatens Data Security

Danger of New Technologies Monitoring Keyboard Typing Sounds

A recent study warned of the danger of new technologies that can learn user data by monitoring keyboard typing sounds because they can steal data using microphones in electronic devices.

Increase in Video Conferencing Software and Microphone Devices

Experts say that with the increased use of video conferencing software such as Zoom, and the proliferation of devices with microphones everywhere, the risk of piracy has also increased, according to the British newspaper, The Guardian.

The study, which was published during a symposium of an international professional association concerned with promoting technological progress, indicates that the researchers developed a model based on machine learning algorithms that was able to identify the keys that are being pressed.

The 36 keys on the MacBook Pro were pressed about 25 times, using different fingers and with different strokes.

Accuracy of Voices Recorded via “Zoom” and Smartphone

The voices were recorded via a “Zoom” call, and on a smartphone located a short distance from the keyboard, and the accuracy of the voices recorded on the phone reached 95 percent, while those recorded via “Zoom” reached 93 percent.

While it’s not clear how the keys were identified, Joshua Harrison, lead author of the study, from Durham University, said it probably depends on how close each key is to the edge of the keyboard.

In turn, Dr. Ihsan Tureni, a co-author of the study, said that with the increasing prevalence of smart devices equipped with microphones inside homes, hacking attacks of this kind confirm the importance of public discussions about artificial intelligence.

The warning comes after researchers in Britain created a deep learning model that can learn the data that users enter into their computers, by monitoring the sounds of typing on the keyboard, with an accuracy of up to 95%.
