Apple Seeds Fifth Betas of iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 to Developers

Apple sent the fifth betas of the future iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 updates to developers today so they can test them. The fourth betas were released two weeks ago.

By opening the Settings app, going to the Software Update section, tapping on the “Beta Updates” option, and turning on the “iOS 17 Developer Beta,” registered developers can join the betas. Keep in mind that you need an Apple ID that is linked to a developer account to download and run the beta.

iOS 17 is a big update that gives each person who calls a unique look. The person who makes the call can also change their own look. Live voicemails let you see a copy of a message as it’s being left, so you can decide if you want to pick up the phone or not. Voice messages sent through iMessage are also now turned into text. When someone misses your FaceTime call, you can also record a video or voice message. FaceTime also works on the Apple TV through Continuity.

Apps have been moved to a new interface in Messages that hides them away for a cleaner look, and there is a new feature called “Check In” that lets your friends and family know where you are when you travel. Check In will automatically tell your friends or family when you get to a place, like home. You can now share locations right from the Messages app.

In a group chat, there’s a “catch-up” arrow that lets you see the first message you missed. You can also use search options to find what you’re looking for more quickly. Stickers have been changed, and now all emoji are stickers. Sticker packs and Memoji are still available. Using the feature in iOS 17 called “remove from background,” you can make the subject of any picture into a sticker.

With StandBy, an iPhone held in a horizontal position can be used as a small home hub that shows things like the calendar, time, home settings, and more. Live Activities can also be shown in full screen.

The widgets on the Home Screen are functional, so you can do things like check off an item on a to-do list or turn off the lights without having to open an app. AirDrop has been made better, and you can now quickly share names with the NameDrop feature. You can also start a SharePlay session by holding two iPhones together. SharePlay now works with CarPlay, so people in the car can also play their own music.

Other new features include a journaling app that will be released later this year, AirPlay in some hotel rooms, changes to the AirPods Pro 2 thanks to a new feature called Adaptive Audio, offline Maps, Siri that doesn’t need the “Hey” command to be activated, and improvements to search and spotlight.
