TikTok Competitor Triller’s User Numbers Questioned by Apptopia
Triller, a potential rival to TikTok, is preparing to go public, but the accuracy of its self-reported user numbers has been called into question by market intelligence firm Apptopia.
Discrepancy in User Numbers
According to Triller’s S-1 filing, the short-form video app has amassed 550 million lifetime sign-ups. However, Apptopia’s estimates reveal that Triller has only been downloaded 73.2 million times since its launch in 2015. This represents an 87% difference compared to Triller’s own reports. Apptopia’s data only reflects mobile app installs, which suggests that the remaining deficit would have to come from web sign-ups.
Apptopia’s Credibility and Triller’s Response
Apptopia, a respected source for app analytics, claims that its estimates are 70% to 90% accurate on average. The company serves hundreds of clients, including prominent names such as Visa, Andreessen Horowitz, Coca-Cola, and Target.
When contacted for comment, Triller maintains the accuracy of its user numbers. However, this is not the first instance where Triller’s self-reported figures have raised doubts. In a previous attempt to go public via SPAC in 2021, Billboard reported that Triller had disclosed higher user numbers to the public than to music rights holders. Similarly, Triller’s past claims of monthly active users have been disputed by industry insiders.
Legal and Financial Challenges
Beyond concerns about user numbers, Triller has faced legal conflicts and financial struggles. The company has been involved in lawsuits with Sony Music, Universal Music Group, and Timbaland and Swizz Beatz, all accusing Triller of owing millions of dollars in missed payments. The Washington Post also reported that Triller had failed to make numerous payments to creators participating in its incubator program.
Usage and Financial Performance
Apptopia’s estimates indicate that users spend an average of 11 minutes per month per device on Triller. While Triller did not confirm this figure, a company spokesperson dismissed its relevance to their business model.
In terms of financial performance, Triller reported $47.7 million in revenue in 2022, but the company has consistently operated at a loss. It incurred a loss of $195.6 million in the previous year and a staggering $773.6 million in 2021.
