The $1,599 for a top-of-the-line gaming card was laughed at by gamers who want speed.
With the release of its Ada Lovelace design cards, Nvidia Corp. may have found a sweet spot for a gaming card that performs as well as a pro card but costs less.
Nvidia NVDA, -2.48%, released its RTX 4070 card on Wednesday for $599, which is $1,000 less than its top-of-the-line monster card, the RTX 4090, which was slammed for being too expensive when it first came out.
When the Lovelace design came out five months ago, Nvidia’s founder and CEO Jensen Huang said, “A 12-inch silicon wafer is much more expensive today than it was yesterday. It’s not just a little bit more expensive; it’s a ton more expensive.”
The chip maker said the 4070 has DLSS 3 neural rendering, real-time ray-tracing, and the ability to run most current games at 1440p resolution at more than 100 frames per second.
A few years ago, ray tracing was new, and only a few games used it. However, Nvidia says that hundreds of games now use it.
“Today’s PC gamers want more high-end visual experiences,” Nvidia said. “83% of GeForce RTX 40 Series desktop gamers turned on ray tracing, and 79% turned on DLSS, a revolutionary breakthrough in AI-powered graphics that massively improves performance.”
These high frame rates are kept up by Nvidia Reflex, “which reduces input lag between devices and monitors,” the company said.
Nvidia said boards will be made by companies like Asustek 2357, -0.54%, Gigabyte, MSI, and PNY.
Compared to cards made by Advanced Micro Devices Inc. AMD, -1.81%, the RTX 4070 seems to be most like the $579 RX 6800.
In January, Nvidia released the RTX 4070 Ti for $799; in October, it released the 4090.
Nvidia also has the 3060Ti, which costs $399, the 3060, which costs $329, and the 3050, which costs $249. The RTX 4080 costs $1,199.
The PHLX Semiconductor Index SOX, -1.83%, is up 22.8%a; the tech-heavy Nasdaq Composite COMP, -0.85%, is up 15%; the S&P 500 SPX, -0.41% is up 7%, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average DJIA, -0.11% is up 1.6% in the same time frame.
On Wednesday, shares of Nvidia fell 2.5%, ending the day at $264.95. The SOX index fell 1.8%, while the Dow Average, S&P 500 index, and Nasdaq all ended the day down less than 1%.
One fan even did an “unboxing” of the 4070 before it came out:

One tester, Verge editor Tom Warren, spent a week looking under the hood. He said the card was “a $599 RTX 3080 that uses less power,” but there was “more to it than that.”
I've been testing Nvidia's new RTX 4070 GPU over the past week. It's essentially a $599 RTX 3080 at 1440p with much lower power draw and DLSS 3, but there's more to it than just that. Full review here: https://t.co/0oEVjoKvUA
