Cybersecurity director at the US National Security Agency, Rob Joyce, warned on Tuesday that Russian hackers are hacking into surveillance cameras private in Ukrainian cafes to collect information on the transit of military supply convoys.
Joyce said Russian government and state-backed hackers continue to carry out attacks against Ukrainian computer systems as part of war in Ukraine.
He stressed that one of the areas they focus on is surveillance cameras used by local authorities and businesses private to monitor movements in proximity to public facilities e private.
“There are constant attacks on Ukrainian interests, be they financial, governmental, personal or corporate, to try and cause disruption,” Joyce said, in a speech at the Center for Washington International and Strategic Studies.
He continued: “Creative things are happening. We see Russian hackers intentionally accessing cameras to film public places broadcast over the Internet to monitor convoys and trains carrying aid.”
He added: “They hacked those cameras … Instead of using (cameras) in the city center available on the Internet, they monitor with surveillance cameras in cafes the streets they have to monitor.”
Joyce indicated that the Russians are also targeting US defense industry companies and logistics transport companies to gain more insight into the arms supply chain to Ukraine. You said that these companies “are exposed to Russian pressure on a daily basis”.
