After American billionaire Elon Musk’s decision to remove the blue check marks from Twitter users who don’t pay two days ago, causing confusion and chaos, it seems that the 50th man is back and retired.
However, he made matters worse by returning this mark of documentation to accounts of long-lost famous people, which sparked a new wave of criticism in face.
The platform added a blue check mark to the accounts of deceased people, including New York chef and broadcaster Anthony Bourdain, who died in 2018.
and Brazilian soccer player Pele, who passed away last year, with notes on their profile stating that the star deceased “joined Twitter Blue” and verified their phone numbers.
Others, including Michael Jackson and Chadwick Boseman, also received blue check marks, noting that they had subscribed to Twitter Blue, according to the British Telegraph.
The confusion came after Musk backtracked on his plans to remove blue Twitter checkmarks from non-subscribers’ accounts, with celebrities claiming their profiles had been reinstated despite refusing to pay.
Famous users, including actor Sir Ian McKellen and former presenter Richard Osman, were among those who said they hadn’t registered despite the blue check mark reappearing on their accounts.
The owner of Twitter has removed the verified status from any account that has declined to take out a monthly subscription to the social network Thursday.
The move has reportedly left figures like the Pope and the Prince and Princess of Wales without a blue check, prompting fears of impersonation and scams that could flood Twitter.
Under Twitter’s new policy, subscribers will have more exposure to their tweets, see fewer ads, and be able to post post longer.
On Friday, Musk admitted that he had personally paid to verify the accounts of several famous users, including the star basketball star LeBron James and author Stephen King after they refused to register.
