On Thursday, Meta lifted a more than two-year ban on former US President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts, according to company spokesman Andy Stone.
Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts have been suspended following an attack by his supporters who nixed the results of the 2020 presidential election that led to a victory for Joe Biden. At the time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Trump’s accounts had been banned for inciting violence and praising riots by his supporters.
Meta announced in late January that it plans to reinstate Trump’s accounts “in the coming weeks,” and if Trump violates the company’s content policies again, his accounts will be subject to an additional ban ranging from one month to two years. depending on the severity of the violation.
Last month, the US tech giant announced an update to its policies for content that doesn’t explicitly violate its rules, but could incite violent or harmful behavior similar to the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
And if it is proven that such content has been published, Meta said it will limit its dissemination by preventing users from sharing the post. The company may also limit account access to advertising tools.
Interestingly, Trump’s now restoring access to his accounts on major platforms by social media it will allow him to reach voters and collect political donations before running for the US presidential election scheduled for 2024.
Interestingly, Trump has about 23 million Instagram followers and 34 million Facebook followers, as of last January.
Trump had benefited from his popularity on social media to reach the White House in 2016, and then used it to rally his supporters in every occasion.
The lifting of the ban on Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts comes after Twitter CEO Elon Musk reversed a decision last November to permanently suspend Trump’s account on his platform after polling users’ opinions, yet the former US president hasn’t posted anything there since the cancellation.
As for Trump, at the moment he is content to post his messages on the social networkTruth Social, which he created and controls with the aim of finding him a platform after being denied access by his supporters through other networks.
