Scientists from the Center for Inflammatory Research VIB-UGent and the Belgian University of Hasselt, in collaboration with the Max Delbrück Center in Germany, have identified the negative impact of excess salt on the immune system.
Cell Metabolism notes that it was previously known that people who consume salt excessively are more likely to develop cardiovascular disease. In this new study, the researchers focused on the other dangers of salt by looking at regulatory T cells (Treg), which are an important part of the immune system. These cells help maintain a balance between normal bodily functions and excessive inflammation.
Researchers believe that altered Treg function is linked to the development of autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis. Previous research has shown that excess sodium can interfere with T cell function, causing an autoimmune phenotype. However, it is not known exactly how salt affects immune cells.
Researchers have found that sodium disrupts Treg function and alters cellular metabolism by inhibiting mitochondrial energy production. It is this mechanism that leads to changes in gene expression that ultimately cause autoimmune diseases. Even short-term disturbances in mitochondrial function have been shown to have long-term consequences for T-cell performance in various experimental paradigms.
The researchers concluded that sodium may be a catalyst for Treg dysfunction, causing disease. However, further research is needed to confirm this conclusion. T cells also play a role in the development of cancer and cardiovascular disease. Therefore, further studies of the effects of sodium may open up new possibilities for changing the functions of immune cells in different situations.
