The Effects of Sleeping for 60 Days Straight on the Human Body

Interestingly, 20 young people were experimented with 60 days of sleep in the winter. But what happens to the body when it is completely deprived of physical activity?

The Journal of Clinical Nutrition notes that the purpose of this study, according to the researchers, was to get an answer to this very question.

In this unique experiment, 20 perfectly healthy young people took part, who spent two months in bed, their lower limbs were above the level of their heads, ate, slept and relieved themselves in bed, that is, they never got out of bed during the entire period. constantly monitored by an international team of scientists.

Scientists from the University of Patta looked at the participants’ metabolism and how well their bodies control their blood sugar levels. It became clear to them that the lack of movement (an inactive lifestyle) negatively affects this indicator. And that the blood sugar levels of all participants increased by 6 percent during the day and by 10 percent at night, and the body’s ability to break down sugar decreased by 24 percent, compared to what it was before the experiment began. . This change also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

It should be noted that this experiment was carried out at the initiative of the European Space Agency in order to study the effect of a long inactive stay in a spacecraft on the health of participants in deep space flights. The results of this experiment are also important on the ground. Because millions of people spend long periods of time in bed due to injury or chronic disease.

Based on the results of this experiment, doctors can develop ways to reduce the impact of a sedentary lifestyle on the health of inactive patients during their treatment.

It should be noted that a special low-calorie diet with a daily dose of vitamin D3 did not change anything in this matter.

According to the researchers, the participants’ blood sugar levels would have risen even more if they hadn’t reduced the number of calories in their diet. These data highlight that a simple diet is not enough to prevent the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle.
