Italy’s National Cyber Security Agency said on Sunday that thousands of servers of computer in around the world have been targeted by a malware attack, warning organizations to take action to protect their systems.
Roberto Baldoni, director general of the agency, told Reuters that the attack aimed to exploit a vulnerability of software and it was widespread.
The Italian news agency ANSA quoted the electronic security agency as saying that the servers in other European countries such as France and Finland, as well as in the United States and in Canada, have been violated.
Probably dozens of Italian organizations have been affected by this attack. Telecom Italia customers reported internet problems on Sunday, but this is not believed to be related to the attack reported by the agency.
US cybersecurity officials said they were evaluating the impact of the reported incidents.
“We are working with our public and private sector partners to assess the impacts of these reported incidents and provide assistance when needed,” the US Cyberand Infrastructure Security Agency said.
