Seismic Activity in Turkey and Syria to Persist for Weeks

Ruben Tatevosyan, deputy director of the Institute of Geophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, said that seismic activity in the North Anatolian fault will continue for several weeks.

The expert points out that this activity has led to two strong earthquakes in Turkey and Syria, but the likelihood of strong earthquakes like the one that happened is still low.

He says: “The strength of the main earthquake was very large. Therefore, many shocks should be expected later, as seismic activity will continue for several weeks. For example, there was an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5, and this is a very strong earthquake. Therefore, I expect the earthquakes to continue for several weeks, but they will weaken.” Over time.”

And he adds that the probability of earthquakes of the same magnitude as the shocks that occurred is small. Because the North Anatolian fault has practically released the energy trapped in it, causing the strongest manifestation of seismic activity.

He says: “These are not the strongest earthquakes that have occurred in Eurasia and other continents, because there are also stronger earthquakes. But if we talk about the region of northern Anatolia, then we can say that his strength was maximum or close to it.
