A report published by The Information claims that Twitter wants to make money from businesses on the platform by charging a fee of $1,000 a month to maintain the gold authentication stamp.
Brands that fail to pay the monthly fee will lose their gold stamp of authentication, according to the report released Friday, however, it’s unclear when that will happen.
Internal messages seen by The Information reveal that Twitter will charge an additional $50 a month to add verification tags to each company account.
The Information’s report lines up with a screenshot posted by the consultant for i social media Matt Navarra, revealing what appears to be an email between Twitter chief product officer Evan Jones and an unnamed company.
“As an early access subscriber, you will receive a gold authentication tag for your organization and affiliate tags. If you wish to participate, the Verified for Organizations) is $1,000 per month, $50 per affiliate account per month with a one month free affiliate offer.
Twitter introduced Gold authentication tags ahead of the enterprise verification program, formerly known as Blue for Business) – which allows businesses to verify and tag themselves on Twitter. It also allows businesses to add tags that show versions in thumbnail of their Twitter profile pictures to accounts belonging to employees, executives and anyone else associated with the brand.
Navarra later posted another screenshot of a direct message between another company and the product manager of Twitter, which once again confirms the $1,000 per month rate being charged.
Twitter, which launched early access to its enterprise certification program last month, has not officially disclosed any information regarding enterprise monthly subscription fees.
Interestingly, the exorbitant subscription is just one of many changes CEO Elon Musk implemented in an effort to boost revenue and reduce Twitter’s debt by $12.5 billion.
In addition to the mass layoffs, Musk has started charging users as low as $8 a month for the blue verification mark and will soon start forcing developers to pay for access to the Twitter API after their apps they were banned from the platform last month.
And while Musk promised to share Twitter Ads revenue with content creators, he said they’d only be eligible if they signed up for Twitter Blue. The company also auctioned off office furniture and other assets after failing to pay rent in various locations, including Twitter headquarters in San Francisco, in California.
