TikTok to Introduce Paid Video Feature

TikTok is working on a new feature that allows content creators to offer videos for a sum of money, as publishers can select videos that the user can only watch after paying an amount starting from a US dollar, according to a report published on Tuesday by L’Information.

Through this move, the company hopes to grow its audience base from older users, in particularly in the United States, where the majority of users are between 18 and 29 years old. The company also hopes this will help it encourage publishers to make videos to generate more profit.

This step is similar to what competing platforms like YouTube and Instagram do, which allow content creators to post clips exclusive to paid subscribers on the publisher’s channel that aren’t available to all users.

Also, TikTok intends to increase the profits that free content creators get for the views theirs get post. The profit-sharing program the company launched three years ago has brought publishers up to $1 billion in profits, according to the report, but many content producers say the program pays very little for videos that don’t reach a ‘wide circulation, which is what the company wants to change in next update.

TikTok plans to require a minimum of 100,000 followers before content creators can take advantage of the profit-boosting program.

These upcoming updates arrive in a difficult period that the Chinese company (ByteDance), developer of TikTok, is going through, in light of the requests to eliminate the application from store Google and Apple in the United States because of concerns about the way in which the company processes the data of its American users.

US politicians call on the Biden administration to act quickly to impose tough laws on data collected by the app or to completely delete the app from apps storedue to concern about the link between the Chinese company and the Beijing government.

TikTok is in negotiations for several years with the Foreign Investment Committee of the United States government to reach an agreement that regulates the work of the company within the country. The two sides are discussing the proposal to transfer the company’s data to the United States in so that those data will come under American control, but this agreement has not yet been put in place in deed and it is unknown if ByteDance will reach a tale agreement or that the US government decides to block the application from the App Stores.

Last month, the US House of Representatives issued a directive banning the use of the TikTok app on any device mobile belonging to the House of Representatives, in as it represents a serious danger to Members of Parliament. In a similar move, the Senate unanimously passed a bill last December banning the application of TikTok in government agencies.

According to a report published by Statista, a specialized company in market studies, the number of users of the application in the United States has reached more than 94 million users, and the number of its users is expected to exceed 100 million in 2025 .
