Perilous Findings Uncovered in the Deepest Location on Earth !

Researchers recently discovered anthropogenic pollutants in one of the deepest and most remote places on Earth, the Atacama Trench, which plunges 8,000 meters (26,246 feet) deep into the Pacific Ocean.

The presence of PCBs in such a remote location confirms an important fact: there is no place on Earth that is free from pollution.

PCBs were produced in large quantities from the 1930s to the 1970s, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere, and were used in electrical equipment, paints, coolants, and many other products.

In the 1960s, it became clear that they were harmful to marine life, leading to an almost universal ban on their use in the mid-1970s.

However, because they take decades to degrade, PCBs can travel long distances and spread to places far from where they were first used, continuing to circulate with ocean currents, winds and rivers.

Our study took place in the Atacama Trench, which runs along the coast of South America for almost 6,000 kilometers (3,728 miles).

The researchers collected sediment at five locations in the trench at varying depths from 2,500 to 8,085 meters.

Each sample was divided into five layers, ranging from surface sediments to deeper clayey layers, and PCBs were found in each.

And in this part of the world, ocean currents bring cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface, which means plankton, tiny organisms, are abundant at the bottom of the ocean food web.

When plankton dies, their cells sink to the bottom, taking pollutants such as PCBs with them. But PCBs do not dissolve well in water and instead prefer to bind to lipid-rich tissues and other parts of living or dead organisms such as plankton.

Because bottom sediments contain so much dead plant and animal remains, they serve as an important sink for pollutants such as PCBs. About 60% of PCBs released in the 20th century are stored in deep ocean sediments.

A deep trench like the Atacama acts like a funnel, picking up bits of dead plants and animals (which scientists call “organic carbon”) that fall into the water.

The trench is full of life, so the microbes are working to decompose the organic carbon in the silt of the seabed.

Organic carbon in the deepest places of the Atacama Basin was found to be more decomposed than in shallower places. At deeper depths, there were also higher concentrations of PCBs per gram of organic carbon in sediments.

The organic carbon in the sludge decomposes more easily than the PCBs that remain and can accumulate in the trench.

And the storage of pollutants means that ocean sediments can be used as a rear-view mirror to the past. We can determine when a layer of sediment has accumulated on the seafloor, and by analyzing pollutants in different layers, we can get information about their concentrations over time.

In the Atacama Trench, PCB concentrations were higher in surface sediments, in contrast to what we normally find in lakes and seas.

As a rule, the highest concentrations are found in the lower layers of sediments deposited in the 1970s-1990s, after which concentrations decrease towards the surface, reflecting the ban and reduction of PCB releases.

And right now, we still don’t understand why the Atacama was so different. It is possible that we did not examine the sediment closely enough to detect small differences in PCB levels, or that the concentrations in this deep trench have not yet peaked.

These concentrations are still very low, hundreds of times lower than in areas close to sources of anthropogenic pollution, such as the Baltic Sea. But the fact that we haven’t found any pollution is a testament to the magnitude of human impact on the environment.

What is certain is that over 350,000 chemicals currently in use around the world are polluting the environment and ourselves. Pollutants have been found buried under one of the world’s deepest ocean trenches – and they’re not going anywhere.

Possible Timeline for Alien Contact with Earth Revealed by Scientists

A group of scientists from the University of California believes that by 2029 hypothetical aliens will be able to contact the Earth.

In 2002, NASA sent radio waves to the Pioneer 12 probe using the usual protocol to send data and confirm that communication had been established.

By 2336, all 272 nearest stars will have been reached.

Signals installed on Pioneer reached the dwarf star in 2018, but scientists have said all 386 stars will receive a signal by 2317. They are looking for a return transmission in 2058.

New Horizons transmissions have not yet encountered a star, but they will contact one in 2119 and have detected 139 stars by 2338.

“The earliest we can count on is 2232,” the study says.

Transmissions to New Horizons won’t hit the star until 75 years have passed since any other spacecraft was sent.

This difference is primarily due to the fact that New Horizons has a later launch date and spends less time inside the heliosphere.

The work “gives extraterrestrial intelligence seekers a narrower set of stars to focus on,” lead author Riley Derek, an engineering student at UCLA, told PopSci.

In the study, Caitlin Rasmussen, an astrobiologist at the University of Washington who is not related to the paper, told PopSic that the study is “an interesting exercise, but unlikely to yield results.”

Lego transformed into a device that can cultivate human skin by scientists!

The problem is that these machines are very expensive – tens or even hundreds of thousands of pounds. Few research groups can expand their budget to cover such costs, no matter how groundbreaking the technology promises.

This prompted the researchers to wonder if they could create an affordable biological 3D printer. And the answer was yes, and I decided to do it with Lego.

Anyone who has ever fiddled with them knows that Lego is not only extremely cheap and versatile, but also made to very high precision from standard parts available for all parts.

The researchers also learned that Lego had already been used to build traditional 3D printers. However, it remains unclear whether we can take the basic idea behind the Lego 3D printer, which prints hard 3D structures out of plastic, and develop a printer capable of printing soft biological materials.

The output must be accurate, reliable and stable so that it can be used in the laboratory.

The researchers set to work on a high-tech, affordable bioprinter in a corner of a Cardiff lab using standard Lego bricks, its mechanical sub-brand Lego Mindstorms, and a lab pump, a device commonly used in research labs. A multidisciplinary team of engineers and biologists worked together to design, design, build, and program the bioprinter.

Still in its infancy, the bioprinter, which costs £500 ($624), still achieves the level of precision needed to produce precise biological material.

The bioprinter can not only provide us with an accurate, representative model of human skin, but can also be used to add diseased cells to the healthy models we produce. This will allow us to study how skin diseases develop and how healthy and diseased cells interact.

Scientists continue to make advances in electronics that can safely monitor and control our health from within the body. Unfortunately, working with these mini medical instruments is not always easy.

But now there is a new type of rechargeable battery that can help in this matter. It is made from edible material and can dissolve safely in the stomach once you do what you need to do.

The prototype device shown in the new study operates at a harmless 0.65 volts and delivers 48 microamps for 12 minutes, well within the range required to power small electronic devices.

“Potential applications in the future range from food chains and sensors that can monitor sanitary conditions, to powering sensors to monitor food storage conditions,” says senior author Mario Caironi, a molecular electronics researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology. These batteries can be used in children’s toys as there is a high risk of swallowing.

Developed from a diverse list of ingredients, this is the first functional rechargeable battery to be served as a snack. Its ingredients include the vitamin riboflavin for the battery’s anode (“negative” end) and quercetin supplements as the cathode (“positive” end). The electrolyte (which generates an electrical charge) is made from a water-based solution, and the separator (which prevents short circuits) is made from nori paper, the name for seaweed found in sushi restaurants.

Often used to treat poisoning, activated charcoal is included to increase electrical conductivity, and the outer contacts that carry electricity to another device are made of beeswax combined with decorative food grade gold.

The battery retains its charge for dozens of cycles, although it must be outside the body to recharge. The prototype created here is about a square centimeter (0.155 square inches), but the team is already working on making it smaller.

“In fact, we are already developing devices with more capacity while reducing overall dimensions. These developments will also be tested with soft edible robots in the future,” says Caironi.

“While our edible batteries do not power electric vehicles, they are proof that batteries can be made from safer materials than current lithium-ion batteries,” says study co-author Evan Elek, a sustainable energy storage scientist at the Italian Technological Institute. institute. Lebedev then discovered that ordinary ethyl alcohol can be converted into butadiene by heating a mixture of alcohol with hydrogen and water to a temperature of 400-500 ° C and passing it through a metal oxide.

This technology was used in the Soviet Union and in many other countries of the world to produce butadiene in the middle of the 20th century, but was subsequently replaced by more efficient and cheaper technologies for extracting this hydrocarbon from oil. Chemists in Saudi Arabia and Europe have found that the efficiency of the Lebedev reaction can be significantly improved and made more competitive if the technology for preparing a catalyst based on silicon and magnesium oxides is used.

Busy days and weeks with a lot of new and interesting events are usually remembered longer than more monotonous ones, when nothing remarkable happens.

For Flamini, the lack of social interaction, combined with a lack of information about family and current affairs, may have greatly reduced the number of memories formed during her loneliness.

Flamini herself explained, “I’m still stuck on November 21, 2021. I don’t know anything about this world.”

The loss of time may also reflect a decline in the importance of time in cave life. In the outside world, the busyness of modern life and the social pressure to not waste time means that many of us live in a constant time crunch. For us, an hour is a measure of how productive and successful we are as adults.

Flamini is not the first to experience changes in her experience over time following a change in environment. A similar experience was reported by the French scientist Michel Sever during his two to six month journeys through the caves in the 1960s and 1970s.

Lost time was consistently reported by adults and children who spent long periods of time in isolation in nuclear bunkers (for research purposes) during the height of the Cold War.

However, Flamini lived with an empty schedule that extended into her future. No business meetings to prepare for, no meetings to rush, and no social notes to keep.

She led an autonomous life where she could eat, sleep and read whenever she wanted. She engaged in drawing, exercising and documenting her experiences. Perhaps it made the passage of time irrelevant.

As the biological rhythms of sleep, thirst, and digestion took over from the ticking hands of the clock, Flamini may have simply become less focused as time went on, eventually losing count.

Flamini’s ability to let go of time may have been enhanced by her strong desire to reach her 500 day goal. In the end, she decided to go to the cave and could leave if she wanted to.

For people who are imprisoned against their will, time can become a prison in itself. Prisoners of war and people serving prison sentences often mention that watching the passage of time can become an obsession. It seems that we can only truly let go of time when we are in control of it.

A new study shows that ambitious targets aimed at curbing our current mass extinction may already be slipping out of reach a year after they were created.

“It is widely recognized that there is little time for the comprehensive and ambitious actions needed to halt biodiversity loss by 2050. This work shows that there is less time than previously thought,” wrote Natural History Museum zoologist Richard Cornford and colleagues.

Cornford and colleagues show that past impacts of habitat loss and climate change explain current trends in bird and mammal population sizes better than recent impacts. Their results indicate that in most cases we will not see the overall effects of the changes we are implementing now for at least a decade, and until then we will already see the blocked effects of past land use and climate change on species abundance.
