How many atomic bombs is equal to the energy of an asteroid that hit the Earth and killed the dinosaurs?

Geologists believe that the asteroid that destroyed the dinosaurs caused not only the formation of the Chicxulub crater, but also the seismic activity of the Earth, which lasted from several weeks to several months.

The Independent notes that, according to Molly Ring, head of the research group at the University of Michigan, the asteroid’s impact with Earth released energy “equivalent to the yield of 10 billion atomic bombs like those used in World War II.” This caused intense seismic activity that lasted from “several weeks to months”. Scientists have studied the impact of the asteroid using state-of-the-art modeling techniques, and also analyzed geological samples from this period in Colombia, Mexico and the United States.

This discovery confirms the results of a recent scientific study published in the journal Advances on a global tsunami caused by an asteroid impact with Earth. According to the study, this tsunami was “2,600 times stronger than the 2004 tsunami off the coast of Indonesia”, the most powerful tsunami to have occurred in human history.

It is reported that at the end of the Cretaceous period 66-65 million years ago, an asteroid with a diameter of 10-14 km collided with the Earth, leaving behind a giant crater with a diameter of 180-200 km, which is the Chickslope crater in southern Mexico. The consequences of this disaster are still the subject of controversy and study.
